Head Swaps Using Old SWM Figures?

By FSD, in Painting

So I'm now getting the itch to try out some head swaps for some of my Rebel Troopers. While there are some very nice 3D printed options out there, some of them seem to be too much of an "alien catch-all" for what I would like to see in my forces.

I've been looking at buying some cheap SWM to decapitate for my needs and was wondering if anyone has done so and what figures worked well for purposes of Legion's "heroic scale".

I know what you mean. A lot of the 3D printed alien heads look like a human in a halloween mask, to me, once on the mini: a lot of those races don't have average human proportions, or have weird hands, or whatever.

You might try some of the more horribly scale-creed WOTC pre-painted ones. But that's doubtful, even the biggest were only about as big as IA minis. Maybe look into various scifi or fantasy kid's toy lines until you find one of Legion scale.

I have used thos WotC models for my rebel troopers and must say I like how they turned out. It's not perfect but it adds a lot of variety to your army. I have two articles on my blog. one pre-painted and one when there done. Check out the article here: https://legion-outpost.blogspot.com/2018/10/rebel-troops-painted.html

Perfect. I think the scale is pretty good. They don’t look like shrunken headed voodoo Troopers *or* silly Halloween masked troopers.

The Bith head specifically looks big enough to show the larger cranium but not overly large to look ridiculous.

I have used a mixture of 3-D printed heads from @melminiatures shapeways shop as well as some WotC miniatures. They can be seen in my painting thread. Some Core set Rebels, a squad of Fleet Troopers and a squad of Commandos. A few WotC heads are a decent scale and I had to look for species that had at least close to human type hands. The 3-D printed heads are scale and you can even pick up sets of arms and feet for some species through some shapeways shops. I planned to do a full Mon Calamari squad and had purchased 7 WotC heads, but, after seeing the Mon Calamari sniper in the Commandos set I am going to purchase 3-D printed heads and arms as well as blasters to build my squad. Unfortunately that means 3 purchases from 3 different shapeways shops. One has the better head sculpts (Mel Miniatures) one has the arms (4 A Duel Tabletop) and one has the blasters (Skull Forge Studios).

All in all, I like doing head swaps as it is a way to add variety to your squads and really what made the Star Wars universe so cool. And I do mean "made".

The Mon Calamari arms are a bit out of proportion but nothing huge, they just need to be shortened a bit at the shoulder and you cant really tell. The Skull Forge blasters are a bit small, other than the E-11s they look a bit out of place on legion scale troops. I ended up cutting some A-280s off of a few different models and doing some arm/hand swaps to get blasters for my 3 Mon Calamari. I have been meaning to post up some pics of (mostly) WIP and (not enought) painted models, I will stry to start on that tonight so you can see what I ended up doing.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it as it will save me some money and headache. This is exactly why I say this is such a great community. I look forward to seeing your work.
