Future books and wish lists

By Lord Dynel, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Has there been any talk about future books? I'm, by no means, and analyst of FFG releases but with all the career sourcebooks now out, has there been any indication where the line is headed? I like the region books they've done, and would love to see more of those, but I'm thinking that era books are going to be the main focus. Some faction books would be cool.

That said, I'd love to see a book just about Coruscant, one on the Empire/First Order, one on the Rebellion/Resistance, and - of course - one on the Knights of the Old Republic era!

I believe at GenCon their rep said the focus is on sector books and era books. If they're not hanging up the space spurs—and it seems like they aren't—I think we'll see at least one more adventure per line.

Era books would certainly be welcome. I know there are pockets in time they are probably restricted to (I wouldn't think they'd be able to do anything past TLJ or even within that era) that still leaves a good bit of time to work with. The separatist should back into DoR really well, I'd think.

I wouldn't mind more adventures, but those aren't the best sellers, I'd imagine. Still, it'd be nice to see another one for AoR and FaD, at least. And sector books would be great as well. It's good to hear that they're not done yet.

My guess is that FFG is probably gauging the success of Genesys before committing more resources back to Star Wars.

I certainly hope we get an Outer Rim Book. With Tatooine and others.

I also think the era book for the second phase of the clone wars is a given.

FFG has generally been pretty tight-lipped regarding future plans for the line. If we extrapolate based upon the predictions of our very own oracle , the product code numbers imply there are still gaps to be filled by products already conceived. Still, difficult to see is the future, always in motion it is.

I'd like artwork to go with some of the ships, vehicles, weapons, armor, etc. This is one thing that's bugged me about a lot of games over the years. If you're going to stat something more than "Pistol, 9mm, Generic" and the mag capacity and damage, then please PLEASE put in some artwork. There's a certain game with a horrible system and some of the worst players in the hobby that's rather notorious for having all the stats for a combat robot, suit of power armor, alien/monster, whatever, and zero art to go with it. I guess I'm supposed to just make something up for that alien combat robot...you know, the one that's 50 feet tall and created by a race that has twelve tentacles instead of arms and legs and uses a number system that's base 12 instead of 10 (relevant because it's available to any character whose starting equipment says "Robot vehicle or power armor of choice"). Because when I GM I don't have enough to do, I need to spend hours on the web looking for art that will work with the supplied stats.

I may be in the minority here, but I'd buy a book that was JUST starships, complete with stats and art. I could deal with black & white drawings (though the art that FFG uses currently would be preferable).

Heck, I'd buy reprints of WEG's Star Wars books, converted to this system and with thus-far-not-canon stuff tossed in the bin. I'd love an Imperial Sourcebook.

I'd love to see a truly epic campaign something like The Enemy Within or Path of the Damned in WFRP. In the latter, they always combined a part of the adventure with a detailed city sourcebook. I could see this done in Star Wars too (substitute city with planet or region , though).

I agree PzVIE. I, for one, actually liked the Dawn of Defiance campaign for SWSE. Some might, but I would not be adverse to a cleaned up and officially published version of this.

I can foresee an era book or two for the Galactic Civil War. A lot of canon characters, coverage of some novels and Marvel comics and round out a few more species and ships.

We can expect to see maybe one new release a year for all three game systems. For those of us that has bought into WEG, WOTC and now FFG, I can clearly see the future of this game. It’s like seeing the future and nothing you can do to stop it. I bought into FFG thinking wow this is a company that’s going to push this, bought into SWCG, now its dead, bought into IA, great game now its dead, bought into the RPG while it’s not as good as WEG and only slighter better than WOTC, it seems that they are clearly wanting not to push this game anymore. I hope you ordered ROS from this site because the release of this item will be very limited. I think they hire “people” and tell them find a way to kill games.

Oh boy, don't even mention my love, Armada! :D

Yeah, I'm not a fan of how Star Wars rpg licenses...heck, most licenesed rpg lines...kind of just "die out" over time. I wasn't big into the WEG line, nor did I have much of an online presence back in the late 90s, so for me, I didn't know for certain the WEG SW line was cancelled until I heard that WotC was going to release a SWRPG line. Of course, not seeing any new products for the WEG line in months, the writing was on the wall. They went from 10+ releases in '96 and '97 to like 3 or 4 in '98, to nothing. D20 tapered down a little more, but SAGA kind of died quickly (meaning multiple releases/year to almost nothing).

Even in today's "fast news" era that the Internet provides, companies are pretty hush-hush when it comes to product lines, especially licensed ones. Nevertheless, it certainly does suck to hear nothing, week after week, month after month, about a line such as Star Wars when it has such a devoted following. The not knowing is what aggravates me the most. I know, first world problems...

But, if we get 3 releases a year, I guess that's better than nothing!

As far as ROS, I preordered from my FLGS. They got me in DoR rather easily, so I wouldn't expect anything less with this release.

Given the fluff for Rise of the Separatists , we should see the second-phase Clone Wars book ( Fall of the Republic , probably) cover that Separatist-to-Rebel bit. And given the development time involved, that should give Episode IX plenty of time to come out, at which point the next era book will probably be the sequel trilogy, followed by the New Republic period.

That's my guess, anyway.

The thing you have to accept about tabletop RPGs as a hobby is that they are incredibly niche, even among gamers. FFG probably makes all its money on the Star Wars license through X-Wing , Armada , and Destiny ; I'd be shocked if they manage to break even on the RPG lines. So it's really more of a passion project.

Besides, in a real way, the RPG is "complete" with all the splat books at this point. It would be awesome to get more—more eras, more sectors, more adventures—but we have everything we need to play the game anywhere and anywhen we want. I'd be disappointed if they decided to cancel the RPG (and again, there's every indication that we'll be getting more content) but I'm already satisfied with everything as it stands now. Sure, I'd have to homebrew a lot more stuff, but I'm fine with that. I've already statted out the starfighters from the sequels.

I wouldn’t say that’s 100% true. While players certainly have everything they need to create characters, there is still a distinct lack of adversaries, particularly “monsters”, as well as iconic alien species that players could use for creating characters. There are plenty of creatures, weapons and other gear, Lightsaber crystals, ships, etc. that still haven’t been given official stats for.

Ha! Sorry just venting. Never got into X-wing or Armada. Working on a way to implement IA, and Legion into the RPG setting, but I would imagine it would be easy to work x-wing and Armada as well.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the RPG is "complete" with regards to the Star Wars galaxy. I meant it's "complete" in the sense that we have a complete game and enough raw material to continue as fans.

There's still a lot left untapped for FFG to keep making RPG content. Heck, on species and planets alone, I think there's enough existing material to fill a half-dozen more sector books. And that's ignoring the constant influx of new material from films, TV shows, books, comics, encyclopedias, toys... This game still has legs, as long as FFG wants to keep it going, and while its other Star Wars content makes them money, I don't imagine they'll stop anytime soon.

My comment was directed at the concept of RPG lines "dying out." I should also mention that a factor in this concept is the slow shift in mechanical trends, as we're currently seeing more games embrace narrative concepts rather than straight-up crunch. (Lookin' at you, Shadowrun ...) But no matter what—if FFG makes a 2nd Edition, stops printing the RPG, loses the Star Wars license—I think we got something special out of it. I cannot picture a future in which I'm still alive and somehow not playing and running this game.

In my highfalutin opinion, and I think it was something that Rodney Thompson mentioned at some point, the game suffered a little from being a beta for the edition of D&D that followed. I believe that edition of D&D has since gone on to the great beyond also.

True. However as someone has pointed out, the core books, and the splat books (assuming that means career books), have a wider market. Adversaries have a market encompassing GMs and collection-completionists, which is a little smaller. Vehicles and equipment I can see having some appeal, however they will go some way towards complicating a currently straightforward system (ok I'm assuming new equipment would add additional features and rules but it's somewhat likely).

I expect we'll get era books from now on.

My days of piracy are in the rear view, so I'd happily pay for the odd digital book, things like adventures. I'm not sure how much of the overall cost is printing though.

Very true. However having a book full of playable species would sell like hot cakes.

If WEG did not fall to incompetent leadership, I would imagine we would be talking about 6E right now. We are only going to get ONE source book a year (if we are lucky enough) to cover all three games. I hope they make each book count.

Corperate Sector Authority, Hapes Consortium, Black Sun/Crimson Dawn/Zann Consortium, ect Sourcebooks. I want more villainous factions besides the empire and some criminal gangs.

CSA I can see, Hapes I doubt, Crime Syndicate I can see.

I have a strong desire to have Bothan Space and the Bothan Spynet covered in detail in a FFG book, but I know it will never happen.

If it does it would likely be AoR based I would think. The Spy book could've been a candidate but also doesn't make sense to have setting information in such a book.

Yep, some of my more memorable campaigns/arcs were when the big bads weren’t the Empire.

Personally, I want a book on shadowports. That could include info on black sun, zann, etc and whoever else controls them. A CSA book would be good as well. An imperial book wouldnt hurt though I don't think it's a must have.
