Quick Imp Homing Missile squad

By Ikka, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I haven't used homing missiles at all yet, but have heard/read that they can be pretty good in 2.0. So I decided to combine some of my favorite Imp ships (quick and maneuverable fighters like the TAP and TIE Adv) with some ordnance ability. I also threw in some Force users, figuring that I better learn how to use them sooner or later. What are your thoughts on this list?

TIE Advanced x1 - Storm Squadron Ace - 50
Storm Squadron Ace - (43)
Marksmanship (1)
Fire-Control System (3)
Homing Missiles (3)
TIE/sk Striker - Black Squadron Scout - 54
Black Squadron Scout - (38)
Juke (4)
•Fifth Brother (12)
TIE Advanced v1 - Inquisitor - 48
Inquisitor - (40)
Fire-Control System (3)
Homing Missiles (3)
Instinctive Aim (2)
TIE Advanced v1 - Inquisitor - 48
Inquisitor - (40)
Fire-Control System (3)
Homing Missiles (3)
Instinctive Aim (2)

I feel like FCS is a little out-of-place on the Inquisitors. They're built to be able to use Instinctive Aim to fire their Missiles without a lock, so probably be taking focus actions more often, either regular or linked off of boost or barrel rolls. These 6 points freed up could upgrade Black Squadron Scout to Duchess, who's got a really respectable Init 5 for only 4 more points, and a rather handy ability. Meanwhile, Marksmanship is probably pretty low value on the Storm Ace. I'd go with Elusive, if I filled the slot at all. Homing Missiles are an interesting way to get into a fight with a TIE Advanced. It'll save the TL for next round probably, making it easier to Focus freely.

  • Storm Squadron Ace (Elusive, Fire-Control System, Homing Missiles) 52
  • Inquisitor (Instinctive Aim, Homing Missiles) 45
  • Inquisitor (Instinctive Aim, Homing Missiles) 45
  • Duchess (Juke, Fifth Brother) 58

It does give them the option not to use their only Force charge for firing the missiles though, saving it for def or off mods.

Taking a Lock for missiles and saving the force for defense is probably less efficient than taking a focus for defense and using the force on missiles. Meanwhile, it'll be a lot easier on a low-initiative ships to not have to rely on being in range to get Locks to fire the missiles. Low-init Lock-based attacks tend to be really hard to use effectively.

It's probably not bad, but it feels a little redundant. I'd rather use those points to upgrade my other ships. If not specifically investing in Instinctive Aim, FCS seems like it'd be a better fit.

That's also just me. I kind of feel like a lot of the time I'd rather give up on redundancy/consistency, and try to open up an edge in another part of the list, but it's clearly a trade-off.

I like this a lot, thanks for the input. The FCS was kind of an extra insurance, but losing it doesn't make me too uneasy losing it- especially if I can upgrade to Duchess.

Tried this list 3 times, lost all games vs 2 different people - found the homing missile most people just took the 1 damage and it wasn't potent enough, even when focusing on 1 ship

Hmm. Good to know. The lack of damage potential was my biggest worry...
