I need ideas for a silly painting competition.

By Rogue Dakotan, in Painting

The Jodo Cast is participating in Extra Life this year. What this means is we're going to be doing 24hrs of live streaming all sorts of Star Wars gaming.

One of the events that day is going to be a Legion painting competition between the three hosts of The Jodo Cast.

Since we'll be on a time crunch, and we want it to be entertaining, we were planning on each getting a pack of Rebel Troopers, and undergoing stupid painting challenges against the clock and each other.

We intend to give away the final results to some lucky winners.

How long do you think we should be allowed for gluing/assembly? Say if we get 30 minutes to glue together the minis, maybe that'll be cutting it close and result in some sloppy gluing?

Other challenge ideas:

  • You must paint a figure using your non dominant hand.
  • You must use an oversized brush.
  • You must paint only via a mirror's reflection of the mini.

There are 7 minis max, so ideally we'd have 7 distinct challenges. Though of course some challenges could cover more than one mini.

Any ideas on how to make this a fun event to watch?

I think a speed painting challenge, like you only have 30 minutes to paint the full mini.

maybe you have to use a color palette chosen by someone else and make it look good.

Monochrome challenge: paint using only shades of X, where X is red, blue, pink(!) or for added silliness randomly determined per contestant.

Love that idea. Make a "wheel of misfortune" or something to go over a dart board to choose the color then roll a D6 for how many shades are required.

Paint an unprimed mini.

For a more uniform challenge, gloss coat the primed mini.

Most miniatures are painted with the assumption that the light source (the sun) is overhead. That influences how all of the shading is done (brighter up top, darker down below, etc.). How about as a challenge you have the players paint a miniature with the light source coming from below - like emergency floor lights in the corridor of a ship. Something like that.

Greyscale challenge:

Can only use Black, White, and Grey. Mixing of those 3 are allowed, but no additional colours are.

Must paint with the brightest color first and end with the darkest.

That sounds really cool if we weren't going to be sorta rushing through all of these.
