What does this mean?

TN 3 {Skill} check (Air 2, Earth 2, Fire 5)

I understand what something like "TN 3 Command (Earth)" means, but not sure on the other.

The TN depends upon which ring you are using. It is TN3 normally, but 2 if you use Air or Earth and 5 if you use Fire.

I should have clarified—I am using Beginner rules. We finished The Topaz Championship, and I am currently preparing In the Palace of the Emerald Champion. This skill check syntax is dropped on page 26 without explanation.
