New OP article up today + kit contents

By hargleblarg, in X-Wing

Not sure I like the new formats. The Quarter kits meant people could roll up on the day and play for prizes. Now I have to turn up several times, pkaying different formats, in order to get anything. While I admire FFG trying to help the FLGS by encouraging regular attendance, for people like me who have to drive over 100 miles to find a FLGS that holds tournaments, several visits to maybe get 3 charge tokens is not worth it. Previously I had a chance of leaving with a bag of tokens every time I went.

Really not wild about the silly cheevos. Do like the patronage cards.

The rest I'm pretty neutral on.

I like the idea of very restricted tournaments. People complained that competitive play ruins the game and I think that this is a nice change from the cutthroat min/maxing we usually see.

The thing is - from experience - if there are different prizes for first than for last, and sometimes even if there aren't, people will still optimise within the bounds set for them.

It doesn't matter if there are strong restrictions they'll find the strongest option within those restrictions and run that.

Can we stop with this quick build, thematic, and wave only bull please? At this point I almost wish I didn't buy into 2.0 because I just want to play standard tournaments without banlists. I thought the whole point of going to electronic point values and such was to make it so any issues with balance could be resolved quickly and we could play standard tournaments to our hearts content. I don't want to be restricted to stupid quick builds, thematic lists, or a small subset of the ships that are playable. If I want thematic or fun stuff I'll play casually at the store or at home with friends and make our own rules up. I don't need FFG to do that for me.

How about no? I've played for 6 years and wished for stuff like this. FFG catered to you for years by only producing boring 100/6 crap events for you. How about you get less condescending and learn a little patience? Sorry you don't get to practice the same list every week for 3 months before the next big game.

STAAAHP trying to make quickbuilds happen!!! They are fine for little Timmy trying out his new toys, but loot for players playing competetive X-wing?

I mean...the same "loot" you get from that event you get in the wave championship event. so...you can either try and enjoy a few rounds of quickbuild or be competitive.

Not quite, you can get the charge tokens at either event but the rest is very different.

fun fact: you can run whatever format you want with your local group, these are just suggestions

Battle of Yavin seems to highly favor imperials. Between supernatural vader and tie swarms, the empire has several viable list archetypes to take to competition. Meanwhile, I don't think Hanfalcon or the y-wings offer a lot competitively, so it feels like rebels will be leaning heavily on X Wings.

Interestingly enough, the Battle of Yavin in the movies highly favored the Imperials, too.

"Intended for as many as sixteen players" ... " you and up to fifteen other players" ... Does FFG intend to dictate a maximum number of players for Quick Build Parties and Thematic Tournaments? How would that work? What if 17 people show up to the store wanting to play? I don't gets it...

Edit: And what is a weekly Attack Run tournament anyway?

I can see both sides of this.

On one hand, I see the desire from back in 1.0 for more format options than just standard unlimited 100/6.

On the other, if we trade one exclusive option for another exclusive option, have we really won?

I know I’d like to be able to play with all my stuff, especially now that all my stuff is theoretically playable without it being auto-nuked for not being combo-bombo enough. I can’t speak for the one quoted, but I dislike the wave only format not because it’s not another choice, but rather a substitute one and one that drives us away from all the money we have invested in 1.0 and the conversion kits.

Quick build format is pretty fun, as long as you’re using the PDFs on FFG’s page so all ships have some options. There’s some really good ones in there I liked. But don’t limit it to “all events will be of this type” because then we have the same problem as before, just with a different set of ships and unhappy players.

The Legion "Ground Assault Kits" only support up to 8 players per event (month). Looks like the X-Wing ones support twice as many players, but then X-Wing takes half the table space of Legion...

Edit: I too am curious as to these Weekly Attack Run tournaments. It sounds like the Deluxe Wave kit is not the same thing as the Quarterly OP Kits.

I don't think it's meant to be a maximum total, but rather saying how many players a single kit can support. They can only put so many participation prizes in a single kit, so if you expect more than that many players, you should get more than one kit.

Based on the numbers at FFG Game Center, the Legion kit is sized just fine. The xwing one will be too small for them, but may be fine for other game stores.

Hey, when do you think the Resistance and First Order kits will be available?
