misdirection vs. teleporting

By fasteddy23, in Talisman Rules Questions

okay so let's say that somebody rolls a 5 on the tavern and decides to teleport for there next move,,,and when their next turn occurs,,,i play misdirection at the beginning of their turn????? do i get to teleport the character to wherever i want?? or do i roll for regular movement for the character and choose the direction??? or does the spell not occur at all???

Yes, you get to teleport his character to any other space in the same Region. The same applies if his character rolls a "5" on the Carnival.

im a little surprised that it works that way. it definately makes misdirection cooler, but the way it reads to me, ...."choose the direction of movement" means clockwise or counter clockwise to me. it doesnt change the destination or number of spaces moved, just the direction. there is no direction of a teleport, and if there were, i would just be teleported to the same space either by the short or long way around the board. is this an official ruling? ill play it either way, it just makes more sense to me that it doesnt work against someone doing something other than normal roll for movement such as rune gate, dungeon door, and teleporting.

Can this be interpreted that as long as someone declares the mode of transporation, you can use misdirection in a timely manner if there's a legal target?

I should say that the character cannot choose to teleport. ( same aplies if somebody rolls for the boatman)

If a opponent cast misdirection, then the character must roll the die and cannot teleport.

The opponent will choose the direction.

As the spell card says: ( choose the direction of movement)

Or simple, the spell just won't work on one who is not using normal movement.

I agree with this last interpretation. Never happened in our games, but I think this is the best way to use misdirection even if is less powerful.

But the player is not forced to teleport or use the boatman, so i should say that if somebody cast misdirection, then the other player cannot teleport, and must use the die for movement.

in my case though, i had chosen to teleport on the previous turn. .. i guess im leaning towards " cant use it against anyone that isnt making a normal move".. i definitely dont agree with someone controlling where i teleport to. that makes the least sense. why not just roll the dice for me too

The many movement options also make this question complicated. What if you have the Clockwork Owl / Walking stick? Does the enemy caster only pick the direction, but you pick the number of squares? Or is it meant as "total movement control" and the caster puts you exactly at the worst possible spot in the direction s/he wants?
