Stress on Small Ships

By Pooleman, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I’m playing a guy who says small based ships can only accumulate a maximum of 1 stress token. He did a red maneuver through a debris cloud so I’m saying he should have 2 stress tokens. Who is correct and why?

There is no limit on the number of stress tokens a ship can have, no matter its base size. If he did a red maneuver through a debris cloud, he would have 2 stress tokens (And can still accumulate more).

I used to fly Tycho Celchu with Push the Limit. I had a separate bag of stress tokens just for him.

Usually, at some point during the game, my opponent would say, "Ok, I get the idea, you don't really need to track it any more." Because there was a huge pile of stress tokens following him around. It got a bit cluttered.

That guy is straight up cheating... nowhere in the rules is there anything even close to mentioning that. The only way he could have come up with that is to realize he was going to get 2 stress and invent a "rule" so he didn't.

Have played against players like that in other games in the past watch him like a hawk. (changing the rules randomly in order to beat new players.... was a freaking TO)

Ask him to show you, in the rules, where it says small-based ships are restricted to a single stress.

I don’t think he was trying to cheat. He seemed to have combined the rules of ionization and how it affects small, medium, and large ships with the stress rules.

I like him a lot but he gets hung up on things. Like the conversion kits. His empire kit came with 10 medium base ship dials, so he was convinced that the kit should have come with 10 medium bases. I tried to tell him that there is no way you could squeeze 10 medium ships into a 200 point list, so 10 medium ship bases wasn’t needed. He disagreed. He opened cases with FFG and ASMODEE to no avail. But I like him.

I did ask that, but then things get tense and I don’t like it.

The only restriction to stress is if you are running Hera crew. "If you have 3 or more stress, remove one and suffer one damage".

There's no rule preventing a small base ship from accruing multiple ion tokens. You could, in theory, have a stack of twenty ion tokens right next to your stack of twenty stress tokens.

The extra ion tokens just don't do anything, and then they all get removed at the same time, so they are (as of now) almost entirely inconsequential.

In other words, you challenged him on his BS and he got testy, right? Usually the sign of someone who knows they're talking crap and don't being called out on it.

I’m aware of this, he just got confused. I wasn’t justifying his error.

lol what !?! There is one ship that is Medium Base in the empire conversion kit, the Punisher, and there is two dial for it... I absolutly don't see where he seen 10 medium dials !??!

That is exactly what you were doing and I'd bet you've known them for awhile. This guy is cheating, straight up. When you asked for proof he got "testy". Fair bet you're going to get a "why don't you trust me?" thrown in your face if you ever bring up that you checked.

If someone is that mixed up with the rules and gets defensive when you question them on it they were not confused they were cheating. What you described is a person who thinks things should always happen the way he thinks it should, he made a flying mistake that gave him 2 stress this was not in his plan of how things were going to go so he invented a rule to get the game state back to how he had planned it to go.

Just watch him close is all I am saying, you don't have to make a big deal out of it but he will continue to do things like that. It's just my friendly warning, in the end it's your game time and your friend so feel free to think I am talking crazy and ignore me. This could have all been a true misunderstanding of the rules and I am just paranoid due to some negative past experiences. (had a situation in another game I used to play when I was new where it looked like I was going to win a game with some decent prizes on the line against the TO when I was informed that he could shoot me twice in a row from his best unit, I questioned him on it but he was the TO and I was new, turns out he was straight up cheating to win that game. I also found out he traded a good unit I had for something that was supposed to be given to all new players, I ended up getting a box of them from the store when a large group of us went rogue and stopped playing with him. There are many other stories of this TO and I am getting grumpy just going over them again. This has made me the kind of person who tries to understand and know all the rules so i know when someone is trying to mess with me. Luckily x-wing has been fantastic I have never played against someone I thought was actively cheating.)

even if he got it mixed up with ions, ions arent limited by small base either.

a small base can still get a bazillion ion tokens, but it removes ALL of them once it does an ion maneuver so tracking beyond 1 is pointless atm.

Maybe he said scum. I’m not sure. But he was convinced FFG shorted him by only giving him 4 medium bases.

I don’t think he was intentionally trying to cheat.

So no one in my group seemed to know that you can’t use the range ruler before you choose your action. Guys would continually move, use the range ruler to check if they had a shot, and if they didn’t they would boost or barrel role accordingly. Or they would check my arc and then barrelbrole out of it. He was legitimately upset when I told him about failed actions and I showed him in the latest 1.0 *** that you can’t premeasure.

So, short version: your friends haven't bothered actually reading the rules and just sort of do whatever they want instead. Then, get upset when you point out there are actually rules?

Yep, that sounds like a fun group to play with...

Well, on that he is not 100% percent wrong...

This is a bit of a let down to have to swap your base around because they did not give enough. I would not write to FFG about it, but this is not like they would be ruined by giving enough of them.

There is a very tiny percentage of the player base who wants/needs a base for every ship they own (I do not personally know any). I am glad the kit cost was not increased to include something that is essentially useless for me. If you need a base for every ship you own then wait for the base kits to come out for medium bases.i allready have way more medium bases then I need just from the reaper, saws, and the conversion kits.

I would not say the percentage is that small, and according to your argument they should stop putting base in each ship they sell to lower cost ?

I find it easier to store the ship when they are on a base. And the price of plastic for this quantity is a joke, they could have put the proper number without increasing anything

From a storage perspective, you can always use the original base it came with, no?

I, for one, am glad to not have yet more plastic waste.

Yes i would be 100% for them removing all the bases from ship expansions to lower cost. I have massive amounts of bases that are basically just garbage.

If they added in extra stuff they would reduce there profit, even if its only tiny bit per kit (even cents) it adds up, every little bit that is not needed they cut out either reduces the cost to us, or maximizes there profit (allowing them to make more stuff) The amount of things i have read on these forums that should have "just been included they cost almost nothing to make" is quite large, if they included all those things we would have had a more expensive kit (already enough complaining about its cost as it is)

They will most likely have a base only blister (like they do for small and large bases) and you can purchase all the basses you want then.

Ship expansions include the minimum items required to play that expansion without having any collection at all.

As a newer player, I have been grateful for that in the past.

However, it does kinda sound that the person the OP was playing against is trying to rewrite the rules to their own benefit, and getting salty when called on it.
