New Legionnaire Reporting In: Help wanted!!!

By Praetorate of the Empire, in Painting

I just got a Core set for Legion. While I am excited to get these cool miniatures on the table, I'm a little intimidated by the amount of work needed for this game.

The only other miniature game I've played is X-Wing, and while of done quite a bit of painting on my ships, those come pre-painted, so I'm not used to needing to prime minis before painting, amongst other things

  • Any suggestions on resources to use for painting tips? I haven't painted any human/alien miniatures before, so anything helps.
  • Primer necessary on these minis? If so, what do you recommend for someone painting by hand?
  • I've never needed to base anything and am liking the look of the textured paints by Citadel. What have experiences been like with these products? Do they hold up well under normal wear and tear? Should I glue minis down on the base first, then paint?
  • Anyone have particularly good storage system tips or suggestions? I'm using Plano for my X-Wing stuff and am pleased with it.
  • Other misc. tips or suggestions?

Welcome! Most people will say Sorastros series on youtube is an excellent resource. I think the community under the painting tab is an excellent point for inspiration and tips. This is a great community and most are more than willing to share.

I personally do not glue them down before painting, I prefer not to create any tight spots when painting. Honestly my method of priming my miniatures is just a drybrush of the color I choose to paint my miniatures but most will recommend their preferred spray primer. Washes can create a number of effects and detail so I recommend them as well. I also recommend either spraying or brushing on a finish to the completed miniature to protect it from handling.

Once again there are alot of threads in the painting tab that show off a lot of great basing techniques. Some use textured paints and some use flocking. Both yield some amazing results. PVA glue is a basing staple.

I find painting miniatures a relaxing and enjoyable experience. I believe there is no wrong way to paint your miniatures. It is a great way to show off your style and possibly inspire others by what you create. Last but not least share your progress with the community. It is a great community and I think we all enjoy seeing what other have done.

Welcome to Legion!

For painting techniques, I would highly suggest you look at this thread. Sorastro has made tutorials for all of the units in the core set (and more!)

There are quite a few guides to painting on youtube, such as

Primer is necessary to help paint bind to then minis better. Carefully spray light thin coats so as to not hide detail.

Basing is as easy and can be simple to complex. Again youtube or mentioned above

As for painting. one word, thin your paints. 2 or 3 thin coats are better to let detail come thru.
