Did Boba Fett make the AT-ST obsolete?

Causation does not equal correlation.

All winning tourney lists have had no AT-STs?

But how many winning tourney lists have Boba? If there are none, then he should be just as bad as the AT-ST by comparison.

True, luckily there’s been a ton of winning Boba lists showing he’s a real unit in the game.

Haven't there also been lists with an AT-ST that win outside of major tourneys?

It sort of looks like people don't run an AT-ST because other people just keep saying its bad and basically equals an instant loss.

Peer pressure to not use it seems to be winning over trying it out to see what works for it...

It’s disheartening, but I haven’t seen any winning list for any event big or small with the AT, at least recently. It’s not an instant loss. If it’s better player vs worse player, the better player will win. But, in my experience as well as what I’ve seen from all the reports is if the players are close to equal skill level, the one without the AT-ST will usually win. That being said, I’m really trying to make it work in my current list for our next local tourney. I’m not trying to discourage anyone either, like the AT on the board just makes the game that much more thematic and I want it to be good, just not seeing the results from it.

All of these comparisons are incorrect though. For the price of the AT-ST I can get Boba and a dlt squad. And if you’re comparing to a fully kitted AT, we’re talking Boba, dlt, and basically a sniper strike team or 30 pts of upgrades.

Also, this game is based on objectives. Boba is much much better at securing those objectives and applying pressure than an AT-ST. And then you get all of Bobas cards which make him even more of an impact on the game.

Actually, this is precisely the point of the comparison. Obviously, Boba and the ATST fill different rolls (although not too different, in they try to be major set pieces if your army) so the question was: is Boba and a DLT stormtrooper squad better than an ATST? Obviously, you feel the answer to that is yes.

My point was that people were only considering Boba vs the AT-ST, when you would still be left with about 90-100 points of other “things” if you go for the Boba route...

I've had quite a bit of success with the AT-ST locally. Also, wasn't there one "big" tournament that was won by an AT-ST user? Either way, there hasn't been enough of them to really tell, especially with new units. The game is still fairly new, with new stuff coming out constantly, so people are still figuring out how to play certain styles. You could be right, and the units are poorly balanced. Or, people are currently having success with more forgiving lists while they figure out the more complicated playstyles.

After further testing, I’ll add of significance that the AT-ST provides cover for troopers, which Fett does not. We were playing Breakthrough with disarray deployment. The AT-ST provided cover for a squad of troopers as they advanced on a Rebel deployment zone; between the troopers and the AT-ST, I could concentrate enough fire to kill the Rebels and leave their deployment zone undefended.

His troopers outnumbered mine, but cover mitigated that advantage. It was close but on turn 6, I seized that deployment zone for a defining victory point. We were otherwise tied, partially thanks to Boba Fett’s bounty on Luke paying off.

Point being, though, the AT-ST provides a mobile unit of cover to protect troopers, commanders, etc. This is something Boba Fett can’t do.
