Home Brew Formats using multiple formats?

By Marinealver, in X-Wing Squad Builder

So tried to get started on my 1st edition variant Allies & Mercenaries bringing it to 2nd edition, which is nothing more than a faction mixing variant. However the variant is supposed to have options and restrictions that are not available in custom formats. A trick I am currently using is multiple custom formats in a format. So here are some of the options I have to add in outside of a singl custom format.

  • Selection of an alternative faction (i.e. Rebel & Scum, or Empire & 1st Order).

So currently I am making a new format for each available faction option. Right now I have 2 set up and it is just scum mercenaries (which all factions can take). But as the other factions enter I will have to make custom formats for them as well and the different allies/mercenaries combinations. When Wave 2 comes out I will have to make 6 more custom formats in addition to the 2 ones I already have. And when the clone wars faction is released I will have to make 12 more for a total of 16 custom formats for my single alternative format. I am also putting a tag (A&M) at the front in case of a search feature to make them easier to find.

  • Making a point limit restriction within lists.

So this is one of the weakest aspect in adapting my format. As of now I put in the title the restriction (Merc Point Max 85) and hope players understand that Scum pilots being mercs with upgrades can't take anymore than 85 points in a 200 point list. I was thinking if there was a way I could link a sub-list but as for now there is none.

As for my examples here you go.

So in making your custom format with the custom format being nothing more than an on/off switch what tricks have you resorted to?
