Welcome to Shinjo Koetsu's NPC List , where I'll be posting NPC's for FFG's L5R setting. My formatting will be a little different than it was for 4th edition, with a greater focus on representing characters at different points during their progression, so that they can either be used as recurring characters, or just better fit into a current game as a single use NPC.

Mirumoto Takashi stood apart from his peers during his childhood for his eloquence, obedience, and honor. Takashi's grandfather was a respected ally of the Crab Clan who had perished beyond the Kaiu Wall, and Takashi had always expressed his desire to retrieve his honored grandfather's katana. Unbeknownst to his clan, Takashi's grandfather haunted his dreams, demanding that his grandson travel south to the Kaiu Wall.

When Mirumoto Takashi finally did travel to the Kaiu Wall, he petitioned for the ability to fight alongside the Crab clan in defending the empire. Most of Takashi's tasks involved performing cleansing rituals or defending against goblins and undead, leading Takashi to believe that he was prepared to enter the Shadowlands on his own, and that stories of Oni were grossly exaggerated. He departed in secret late at night.

When Takashi did return, he had indeed found his grandfather's katana, but the trip had changed Takashi. While he refuses to talk about his experiences, he is skittish at the first sight of battle, and has withdrawn from social interaction. The Kuni Purifier's have been notified, as many fear that Takashi may be tainted.

Bayushi Kagetaka
Bayushi Manipulator School [Courtier]

When Bayushi Kagetaka passed his Gempuku, he was tasked with the simple job of representing the Bayushi family at a Sparrow wedding reception. Three hours before the reception, the groom-to-be had a violent outburst towards his bride's father. The wedding was immediately delayed, and two weeks later the potential groom died in a duel-to-the-death against his betrothed's father. Kagetaka was immediately singled out by his superiors for a position as a provocateur in the Scorpion's courts.

While Kagetaka relishes the use of his skills in pushing political opponents over the edge, he also enjoys honing his skills on any unsuspecting individual around him, usually playing a personal game to see how much disruption he can cause without being tied to the situation by his superiors.

Kogoro
Worldly Ronin Path [Bushi, Courtier]

*Note: I didn't give Kogoro any Clan or Family bonuses, due to being Ronin. Also skipped "20 questions" steps relating to his clan or Bushido. Not sure if this is correct or not...*

Kogoro's parents were Ronin and bandits. When he was old enough, his parents allowed him to join them on his first caravan raid. Unfortunately, the caravan was aware of local bandits, and was heavily guarded. Kogoro's parents sacrificed their lives giving Kogoro a chance to flee. Local peasants found him crying, almost non-responsive, and raised him as their own. While Kogoro appreciated their kindness, he never forgot where he came from, and the Samurai's roll in the death of his parents.

As a young adult, Kogoro joined up with a small band of Ronin and peasants, and began his life as a bandit anew. Their raids on caravans were carefully planned, and Kogoro always remembered to scout well before committing to the raid.

Years later, Kogoro's reputation continued to grow among disillusioned peasants. He now has enough support that he believes he might be able to overthrow the local governor and dissolve the class system. With luck, they may even be able to defend the area from anyone that seeks to take it back.

Kakita Tadao

Kakita Tadao was a promising young samurai, excelling in all of his artistic and martial endeavors. The day of his gempuku, Tadao tripped and twisted his ankle, preventing him from participating. Since then he has been plagued by rumors of inevitable failure.

Tadao has strived to prove himself time and again, challenging any duelist and soundly beating them. As he has fought to regain his reputation, he has become more vicious, and people now talk about his cruelty instead.

Daidoji Haruo
Daidoji Iron Warrior School [Bushi]

Daidoji Haruo was a promising young student, quick to adapt to any new situation. Prior to his Gempuku ceremony, an overzealous opponent accidentally fractured Haruo's spine, leaving him bedridden for months. Haruo was allowed to participate, and pass, his Gempuku despite very little participation on his part. He felt cynical, that his friends and family pitied him, and that his worth to the Crane had been greatly diminished. After weeks of self-pity, he refocused his efforts, and discovered that he had a natural talent for commerce and government. He truly was blessed by Daikoku himself! But it wasn't enough...

Haruo first felt the call of the Kansen while travelling to the Crab border to trade rice for steel. Haruo traded Daikoku's blessing for the mentorship of the Kansen, and he felt in control of his own life for the first time. The turning point for Haruo was when the Kansen informed him that they could cure his back pain by dulling his physical sensations. Haruo was overly eager to have this gift, not realizing that he was openly inviting spiritual corruption in the form of the Shadowlands Taint.

Haruo now has given up his life as a Crane merchant, and wanders the Crane provinces preying on the weak with the aid of Zombie Peasants.

Shosuro Hana

Each serve the Scorpion clan in their own way. For Shosuro Hana, her dream was to distinguish herself as an actress and acrobat, drawing crowds and earning her status within the clan and empire. She became popular in the courts of the Crane, Lion, and Scorpion for her not-so-subtle jabs at the Crab clan, who she finds to be intolerable braggarts.

Shosuro Hana excelled at her chosen profession, drawing larger crowds as her skills as a performer increased. Her handlers required that she learn basic martial and shinobi skills, but otherwise encouraged her in her pursuits. That is, until she had garnered a suitable reputation that she could use her fame to ruin the reputation of Crane artisans, Lion courtiers, and others. Suddenly her handlers had taken a more hands-on approach to her training, and her day-to-day affairs had become dictated to her by her superiors.

Shosuro Hana quickly fell into a state of depression, as she realized that her own clan had manipulated her, as they do others. She was nothing but an instrument of their political machinations. She began to cope with her depression by finding relief in opium dens throughout the Shosuro provinces. Her handlers are beginning to realize that she is close to self-destructing, and need to find a solution to this impending problem.

Kuni Daisaku
Kuni Purifier School [Shugenja, Bushi]

Kuni Daisaku was always unlucky in love, so when the beautiful Bayushi Kaoruko returned his interest, Daisaku was elated. His trust in her was absolute, so much so that he confided in her that his sensei had studies maho in order to learn how best to combat it. The concept had made him uncomfortable, and he had simply sought out his wife's council on the matter.

Instead, he found himself being blackmailed by her. Her immediate family threatened to share this information, and imply that Daisaku was complicit in the matter, unless he falsely accused their political opponents of being Maho-Tsukai. After two questionable assassinations, word spread that Daisaku might not be sincere with his accusations.

Daisaku was outraged. He confronted his wife, insisting that this stop immediately, but she refused. Furious, Daisaku disappeared in the night. Without papers, he traveled to the Bayushi province and murdered Kaoruko's immediate family, one by one. When he returned, he beat his own wife within an inch of her life. In return, she poisoned Daisaku, and while it didn't kill him, his liver is now permanently damaged.

Daisaku now lives in constant state of anger and paranoia. His wife, once the love of his life, actively works to discredit him on the best of days, and seeks to kill him in his sleep on the worst of days. Her extended family has made several assassination attempts against him, each failing due to luck or by shear design. His reputation is ruined, his body is wrecked, and his faith in the code of Bushido is waning.

I figured that after the last few train-wreck of characters that I posted, I'd post a quick and easy throw-away character with Shiba Takahiro. He can be used as a yojimbo, duelist, pseudo-scholar, etc. He doesn't have as much depth as previous characters, so just by changing his Advantage/Disadvantages, he can easily have a much different role in a story.

Mirumoto Koetsu
Miromoto Two-Heavens Adept School [Bushi]

Mirumoto Koetsu's father was an honorable Emerald Magistrate who died at the hands of tainted Ronin living deep in the mountains of the Dragon days before Koetsu was born. Koetsu was born with striking white eyes, able to easily see spirits, and often communicated with the ghost of his father. Koetsu's father guided him towards vengeance, causing Mirumoto Koetsu to have many philosophical clashes with his clan regarding the passive role of the Dragon in the empire, and many more arguments regarding the tenets of Bushido.

Mirumoto Koetsu eventually left to travel the Dragon mountains, rooting out bandits, Ronin, and even worse types of evil. He viewed progress in his school as incidental, and instead let the ghost of his father focus Koetsu's anger against the enemies of the empire.

Akodo Kiyoshi lives a blessed life, being born of a noble lineage and being married to a women he loves deeply. Unfortunately for Kiyoshi, an anonymous shinobi has made threats against his wife, forcing Kiyoshi to bend to their will. So far their tasks have been minor and discrete, but Kiyoshi fears that as he distinguishes himself further as a competent yojimbo, a larger, more insidious task may be coming.
