Dutch with R3 and another ship with R3

By player3506352, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi,
how would you handle the following setting ?

We have Dutch Vander with R3-astromech and another friendly ship with R3-astromech flying within Range 3.

Ruletext for Dutch:
After you perform the lock action, you may choose 1 friendly ship at range 1-3. That ship may acquire a lock on the object you locked, ignoring range restrictions.

Ruletext for R3:
You can maintain up to 2 locks. Each lock must be on a different object.
After you perform a lock action, you may acquire a lock.

Dutch perfoms a lock action ...

Possible chain of steps:
- Dutch performs a lock and his ability, as well as R3 trigger.
-- Dutch performs a lock and may aquire a second lock because of his R3
-- The other friendly ship may aquire a lock. It can not aquire a second lock, because the trigger to do so, would be to perform the action.
-- Dutch enables another ship to aquire a lock, when he performs the lock action. Dutch aquiring a lock does not trigger his pilot ability.

So Dutch would end up with 2 locks on 2 different ships and the other friendly ship would end up with one lock on one of the 2 ships, hat Dutch locked. Not benefitting from its own R3-astromech.

sounds right. but then when the other friendly ship activates, since it acquired a lock and did not perform the lock action, it now could take a second lock.

For background, Dutch's ability only triggers when he performs a Lock action , and R3 Astromech only triggers when it's ship performs a Lock action .

So if the only lock action performed is the one Dutch performs, Dutch gets his lock on Target-A. Now, there are two abilities which can be resolved in either order: R3-Dutch can allow Dutch a Lock on Target-B, or Friendly Ship can acquire a lock on Target-A (this is not a Lock action and does not trigger R3-Friend). While these can be resolved in either order, I don't can't think of an effect off the top of my head where it would matter.

Per the Ciena Ree and Sai rulings that they only work on the initial action coordinated, it stands to reason that Dutch's ability only allows a ship to acquire a lock on the initial ship locked (Target-A), even if Dutch resolves his R3-Dutch to lock Target-B. So be sure to pick the Target-A as the one you want Friend to lock.

R3 is "you may acquire a lock"

Dutch only works after you perform a lock action , so dutches ability would not trigger off the second lock provided by R3,

Dutch only performed one lock action so the first thing he locked is the only ship the other ship could lock.

I would link the cards... but ffg gona ffg and the pictures are all broken in the squad builder.
