1st edition. "Mauler Mithel question"

By LTuser, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am going through, and writing out all the pilots i have for the empire, to chart them all from PS 1 to 9. And i noticed under the Tie fighter pilot "Mauler Mithel", it says, "Roll one additional attack dice at range 1".

Is that +1 attack dice, on TOP OF THE +1 you get for firing a primary weapon at range 1?

yes.

Wouldn't be much of an ability otherwise would it?

See if he gets in close he will MAUL you haha

Ahh.. Also since the card just says "one die" period, is that even if say, shooting a missile/turret, not just the primary attack?

It would, however the TIE Fighter doesn't have a way to equip a missile, turret or other secondary weapon.

There's one: Snap Shot. So he'd give that an extra die as well. (Snap Shot prohibits modifying the dice, but changing how many dice get rolled in the first place isn't a modification.)

Adding dice is a modification, as I am sure Omega Leader prevented, for example, Finn adding a blank result if in the forward arc, the same way as the Range 1 and Range 3 bonus us a modification.

Adding a result (ie. Finn, Norra) is a modification. Changing the number of dice rolled (ie. range 1 bonus, Mauler, Kanan pilot) is not.

How is modifying the number of dice rolled not modifying?

Basically, because it doesn't happen in the modify dice step.

Also because the rules say so (bottom of p9 in the rrg).

Edit: I'm stupid and was looking through the 2e rrg. The rule is the same in 1e, but most likely on a different page.

I can't read

Modifying Dice is defined as one of these things:

  • Re-Rolling Dice (using target lock, Predator)
  • Adding Dice Results (spending evade, Finn)
  • Changing Dice Results (spending focus, Juke, Guidance Chips)

Anything else is NOT a dice modification. Examples of those situations:

  • Adding Dice (range bonuses, Jan Ors, Ailerons)
  • Cancelling Dice Results (Crack Shot, Lieutenant Kestal)
  • Spending Dice Results (Optimised Prototype) - note that, in Second Edition, spending dice results is considered to be a dice modification!

This actually doesn't matter. The Modify Dice step is merely the default time for modifications to happen. It is not used to determine if an effect is a modification.

The only important thing is what the effect does. As emeraldbeacon points out, the 1e rulebook specifies that only rerolling, changing to a specific face, and adding a specific face are modifications.

True. However, looking at a # of the "AI Pilot cards" for Hotac, it seems they mix pilots around. I see a decimator pilot (rear admiral whazzhisname) as the 'ELITE PS 9, pilot for a defender. I see Backstabber (a fighter pilot) on an Interceptor's elite line.
