Rebels need a swarm ship (like Howl, Jonus, Drea, Serrisu, etc.)

By HanScottFirst, in X-Wing

I could see it being a new HWK or Z that lets non-limited friendly ships in arc reroll one die while making a primary attack. Or maybe something weird like friendly ships at range 2 can change one focus while attacking, etc.

Rebels have some good swarm options w/the Z and A, but no way to get modification out to them. Most Rebel synergy abilities help 1 ship, not 3 to 6 ships like Howl, Jonus, Drea, etc. can.

Ideas? Thoughts? What characters could fill that role?

No. Just no. Not every faction needs to have a swarm. The factions need to feel different.

Rebels can swarm, they just don't have a "swarm leader" in the same way, not without bringing in talents.

And really, that's fine. They have lots of pilots which make other ships stronger, such as Cracken or Lando, or that work better when it has more friendly ships, like Blount or Horton.

They have a swarm ship... Darklighter. Not that one, the other one.

What? I didn't say they had a good one...

I think Biggs might be the better swarm leader over Gavin, honestly.

No they don't, because the game shouldn't be an amorphous flavourless mush where everything is the same.

Good points! I guess a large part of 2.0 is they want every faction to be unique, so I see that for sure.

I guess, though, could there be some way to have the swarm list archetype, but in the Rebel faction identity?

The Rebel identity has been described as self-sacrificing to aid a friend/or sacrifice for the greater good. What about a pilot ability similar to the old Operations Specialist? Like, when a friendly ship misses, you can assign another ship a focus. Or maybe something like 1.0 New Chewbacca?

For real, this might actually do okay vs Bombers, or low shield ships haha. I would fly it (if I had enough Zs):

What's wrong with Red Leader and Gold Leader?

Arguably both darklighters are useful in a swarm

Honestly, the rebel archetype is 'mutually supporting aces'.

Their most swarmy thing should be 'running four mutually supporting aces'.

They do have swarms. But they are not the best at it because the point of the game is to feel like starwars, where one faction use cheap and expandable ships and the other use dedicated pilots and heroes and save the resources.

Ok, you talk about pure gameplay ( no fluff) but then: If everything is open to all factions, you just pay more money to have the same ships with different skins.

The real issue is not swarm vs no-swarm, or rebel faction identity, it is “how easily can I get double mods on attack with all (or most) of my ships?”

Drea, Howlrunner, Jonus all make this stupidly easy, swarm or no. Rebels have nothing to compare.

Uh huh. I'll raise you Roark + Trick Shot Dash with gunner Han.... Find their equivalent in the other factions...

They have both a great swarm ship, the z95, and the best Swarm Leader in the game, Blair Bunke. #micdrop

They don't need that. With FFG introducing even more factions into the game I really want to see them moving away from complete homogenization instead of toward it. Each faction should have stuff that they're better at than the others. Rebels aren't great at flying in big swarms. You can do it, but it shouldn't have the same kind of tools as Imperial swarms get.

Naked Saw with 4 Y's with proton bombs.

EDIT: Make 2 seismics and put sabine on the U.

Was thinking Saw would work nice with baffle Z95s but to set it up would leave them at 1 hp before engaging. Not a good idea. Y's are the cheapest thing that can handle being damaged.

You must be joking... A big point of 2.0 was to develop distinct faction identities!

Esege and Gavin both fill this role. If they're not good enough at it, maybe they need a bit of a discount. Never tried Esege personally, but I've done pretty well with Gavin. If he ends up getting a point drop come January, he'll definitely be a staple in my lists.

Rebels shouldn't get these types of ships, but they should get a points reduction to a lot of their generics to make up for the fact that they don't get that kind of exponential force multiplier that is provided by ships like Howl/Jonus/Jendon/Sloane/Drea etc.

The Z-95 is a perfect filler ship. It is cheap and you can squeeze it into any lists even though it costs the same as a TIE Fighter it is better as a support to the list not the entirety.

The TIE Fighter is a good swarm ship. I like how the ships that are priced at the same fill 2 completely different roles. It brings out a little more flavor to the game.

How about this new idea: instead of a copy cat ship, what about crew to help rebel swarms?

Kind of in the same vein as how Leia crew can help the whole squad. What about June Sato?

I could see him being a "large ship only" crew, and provide some buff to non-limited A-Wings. Or maybe Admiral Ackbar, large ship only, and provide some buff to all non-limited ships.

The whole idea behind the swarm for the Empire is that they had the resources to make massive amounts of cheap, expendable ships, so they would just throw as many TIEs as they possibly could at a problem until it was just overwhelmed.

The Rebellion did not have the means to do so as they were a rag tag band of troublemakers who didn't even have a ship for every person in the organization. As a result they are more focused on effective single/squads of ships that can get the job done and come back alive, hit and run tactics if you will.

I understand that gameplay > story accuracy, but giving Rebels better access to a swarm type ship takes away what makes them the Rebellion in terms of the game.
