Force FIelds in melee

By Tetragon Tanebrae, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Does anyone know whether the rules for foce fields in Ascension works against melee attacks? the old rules says that they does not (except possibly the Amulet of Warding) but in Ascension in just say "whenever a character is attacked...". and do they work against psychic powers as well?

I guess it is more a matter of interpretation than anything else, I just wanted to know if anyone had found or knew something that I did not.

Thanks in advance. :)

Technically as per the RAW they do until an Errata is published.

Unless it's ruled differently in the future, I say you should treat the field in the IH and Ascension as completely different items. Their effects are totally different (one reduces damage, other works like an Invulnerable save in the TT) so I'd say the rules are too. Anyways, in the TT the Icon of the Just works in melee, so I'd say that the Ascension ones do work in melee.

I concur. Two different animals.

The Eldar Shimmer Shield is noted as specifically as having an exception of only working against Shooting and Psychic attacks from outside the field, which implies that the standard ones work against melee as well.

Heck, one of my favourite tactics back in 40K second ed. when facing Tyranid armies (Happened WAY too often back then) was to kit out a Space Marine Commander in Terminator Armour, Thunderhammer, Storm Shield, Digital Weapons and a Conversion Field. Before they published the wargear cards errata you could pile on with a Jump Pack too! Then I would hurl my commander into melee as soon as superhumanly possible! He was as you might expect, a powerhouse of slaughter. Then when the bugs attack they naturally would hit the heroic marine... Triggering his Conversion field and blinding all unprotected fighters within S inches. Nids/Stealers/Gaunts are not protected from flashes, but a Marine with Autosenses IS. So all the bugs within 6" (Genestealers were S6) were blinded and lost almost all of their WS. He likewise had THREE armour saves... I felt that to be fair and retalitory cheese for all the BS that Nid' players pulled with their Carnifex back then.

More recent rules sets still have force fields protecting from both shooting and melee attacks (as Invulnerable saves). SM Chaplains, Eldar Farseers and Warlocks being the most common examples.

So both RAW and TT history support fields working in melee unless otherwise noted.

Thank you for the help everybody. happy.gif
