Norman Withers Question

By Duciris, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I'm gearing up to play the Carcosa campaign (I kept it hid from myself for a 4-player game) and I have decided to masquerade as Norman Withers. I'm looking at his replacement card and Scrying (3). Is the Free Action trigger on Split the Angle (Exhaust Split the Angle and discard the top card of your deck: Discard the top card of the encounter deck) a separate line and therefor a separate action from the Action trigger (Reveal the top card of the encounter deck.)? If so, I can use Scrying to rearrange the top 3 of the Encounter deck, and then discard the one I left on top.

The way that the card is worded, I think that is correct.

They are two separate things to trigger, so yes you can.

Yes. It's a healthy combo.

Right, I don't think this will become game-breaking, I just wanted a 'yes' or a 'no' before we started.

I feel that the spacing between the lines indicated that the top 2 lines (Norman Withers... & Revel the...) were spaced the same as the lines (Reveal the... & Exhaust Split...). By contrast, the last 2 lines (Exhaust Split... & of your...) were spaced more closely. This indicated to me that the probably were separate effects.

Thanks, Guys!

I'm not sure how nested triggered abilities would work anyway. Does such a thing exist?

Have fun! Norman was my investigator for my blind Carcosa play (2 player, with Skids). He can be surprisingly lethal.

They are definitely separate. This is not even close to game-breaking. If you didn't have to exhaust Split the Angle, it would be much more powerful, but at the same time discarding cards from the encounter deck becomes almost less powerful the more you do it because you deplete the amount of time it will take for them to get shuffled back in too. And if you use scrying to look at the cards, there's always that risk of the sanity loss too.

It's definitely an interesting combo though! And could be particularly good in cases where you are not doing a blind run and you know what might be coming.

Sure. I'm used to playing 2-player, so we don't often run through the entire deck - it either gets shuffled by a game effect or there aren't enough rounds. That's something new for me to consider.

I'll be our Seeker, so I'll clue hunt enough, although we have a Jenny Barns kitted out to investigate and a Roland Banks who should be murder-cluing.

Yeah, I usually play 3 player and we don't always shuffle but it does happen. Cycling back through and seeing those Ancient Evils resurface is never fun.

Looks like a fun deck. :) I've never played as Norman, just watched someone use him. He seemed pretty good (and fun).
