ID chits not staying in - solution?

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

Hi all,

The new, little, cardboard ID tokens/tombstones don't seem to fit into the bases at all. They fall out all the time. Anyone else find this happen to them? Any solutions?

I was thinking of getting that gunk used to hold posters up on dorm room walls. I figure it's cheap and it should hold it.

I just tore off the corner of my list sheet and wrapped the bottom of the token.

That’s basically what I’ve done...a small piece of paper where the chit goes into the slot.

Well, I have at least one set of all 80+ ID tokens from first edition still so I guess I'll keep using those.

I thickened the base with some superglue, wouldn't recommend that. Works okay, but took too long to dry.

I put a tiny, tiny dot of gorilla glue on the back bottom edge. Sticks fine.

I honestly think the acrylic ID/arc tokens from Curled Paw Creatives is the best solution.

Yes, but this costs money.

Wow....gorilla glue might actually be useful for something....

A tiny, tiny dot on the back of a loose dial also makes it better. I use it for all kinds of stuff like this.

That seems to be about the only thing it's good for. I've tried it on almost everything and it never works.

Hey, don't knock Gorilla Glue, I love the stuff and use it all the time! ? Part of my business involves restoring violins and it's just the thing for quickly fixing cheap instruments that don't deserve the time and effort of using all the old traditional fancy hide glues and such. Properly done (clamped and activated with H20), anything I glue together with that stuff will not come apart in anyone's lifetime.

Most people don't realize this, but you're supposed to mix a little water into GGlue. This chemically activates the glue and makes it foam and expand. @TasteTheRainbow , I take it you ignore this step and just put the tiniest dollop of the stuff where you want it, and let it dry in its non-active state?

I have been nothing but disappointed with the stuff. I've used it on furniture to toys to....just about anything. It's utterly useless. Even my father in law has quit using it. Well....never did mix it with water, but does the squeeze bottle actually say this????

Yes. It makes a little plug of rubbery plastic that can grip if you don’t add the water.

Yes lol. That’s how it works!

I'm looking at the bottle right now. Directions read:
"Lightly dampen one surface with water. Do not add water to bottle." The directions also explain that you need to clamp the item well for 1-2 hours, and you get a full cure in 24. There's even a little graphic with steps that says "1: Damp it! 2: Glue it! 3: Clamp it!® "

You need to use water AND clamp. If you don't, GGlue is next to worthless. If you do it right and glue two items that take well to the glue, you will never remove the bonded items from each other without destroying both of them. Just be aware that the glue expands to 3-4 times its size, so you don't need to use a lot, and you should account for the foaming. If I'm working on something I don't want to dampen first, I will actually smear a bit on a piece of plastic or paper and add a drop of water and mix it in with a spatula before applying it. Once you mix them, though, you have to act pretty fast. GG is kind of like a two-part epoxy except that you provide the second half of the mix in the form of water.

I think a lot of people don't know how to use the stuff properly because let's face it, does it really occur to most people read the directions on something simple like a glue bottle? I think lately they've taken to putting the "Damp it! Clamp it!" graphic on the box the glue comes in, for that very reason.

Thanks for the tip, TastetheRainbow! I'm going to give that a shot today.

huh. interesting. I've never tried using GGlue do to the expanding aspect. had no idea you needed to mix with water.

anyway, on topic. my ID markers seem to fit in everything just fine except for medium basis, they wont stay in those. Very floppy

Go figure. The best solution is to make a solution. . .with GGlue.

Read your labels, folks. Also, has anybody had any success with spraying fixative on them? Does that thicken them up enough to stay in the base slots?

Mine don't fit in the medium bases; I tried clear tape around the bottom edge but it didn't add enough bulk.

Seriously eyeballing these Curled Paw bits...
