i guess i do something wrong

By player767602, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello All,

am a new player at Arkham but old fan of Lovecraft ;)

i played only solo, can't find players in amsterdam NL.. especially when you're french and don't quite speak their language ;)

- Nevertheless, here's my problem: i played between 7 to 10 times the game now, and i've never lost nor awakened the older one..

I always managed to seal 6 gates and then i win, right ?

- I played most of the games 4 characters, random. game length are around 6 hours.

- Is there anything obvious i can do wrong ?

what I do right is that i use the old one card to ensure their specifics are applied, i put one token each time a gate open on their card (except on monsters surge and gate already closed).

- one question i have though, is in the case of an open gate which have a monster on it :

when an investigator goes on this gate, does he have to fight/evade the monster before going through ?

when an investigator comes back from other world and there is a monster, shall i fight/evade first or can i close/seal before?

Thanks ya all !

I'm kind of skimming at work, but I just wanted to ask a clarification:

"what I do right is that i use the old one card to ensure their specifics are applied, i put one token each time a gate open on their card (except on monsters surge and gate already closed)"

When you say you don't place gates.. do you really mean when you have a gate SEALED, or do you mean what you typed, that once a gate is closed nothing can open there again?

Because that might be a source of your easy time.

When the investigator moves into a location with a monster and gate, they must fight or evade the monster. You don't go through the Gate until the Arkham Encounter Phase. So it's "Movement Phase" - you enter location and must resolve encountering monster as per normal movement into location with monster rules. Then Arkham Encounter and go through gate, then Other Wold Encounter and have your Encounter there.

When an investigator comes back, on that first turn back they can ignore the monster. If they want they can take on the monster, but they get a "free pass" on encountering it that first turn back. If they can't close gate that turn (since they move back, and then on Arkham Encounter phase try to close gate), then next turn they have to deal with monster. Even if they close gate, they still have to deal with monster that next turn - unless they were lucky and the gate closed has the same movement code of the monster there.

Overall, I play solo mostly too though have some games with friends time to time. I play 4 investigators mostly (sometimes 3), and have been playing against the AO's in ascending scale of difficulty, only going on to next one after I've beaten one twice without it seeming flukey.

I think the consensus is that the base game is easy once you get it "figured out", that's when you bring in the various expansions to ramp up difficulty with heralds, gate bursts etc.

Arkham Horror base game is easy if you play it correctly. If you want a simple fix to crank up the game difficulty, prior to buying an expansion (I'd recommend Dunwich as a first), start off all Ancient Ones with two doom tokens, and increase their combat modifiers by -3. Start off Azathoth with 3 doom tokens.

thank you all for your posts, it helps a lot !

Athenor : when i close it can be open again, when i seal, nothing can happen there. my mistake in typing correctly my question...

Indeed i could raise the difficulty of the ancient ones, but well, i don t really feel like losing either ;)

Valvorik : thanks for the clarification, big help there

i guess i'll go for an expansion indeed. i was more thinking about Innsmouth as i loved the novel, though

txs again for your posts

Innsmouth is a good expansion, but it's a bad first expansion (the monsters aren't very strong, and it doesn't come with any items).
