Proximity Mine dropped on multiple ships

By Hiemfire, in X-Wing Rules Questions

From the pinned official rules:

Q: Does a Proximity Mine, when dropped overlapping a ship in the System Phase, detonate immediately?

A: Yes. When an object is placed underneath a ship, that ship counts as overlapping that object.

So a ship drops a proximity mine under a group of ships. Does that mean, as I suspect it does, that every ship now overlaping the mine template has to roll for the effect of the mine (1 hit + all hits and crits rolled on the 2 dice)?

No. One ship of the dropper's choice. They included this in the rules ref they just forgot to include the single ship case.

Sorry, what? Are you saying if I am able to drop a mine overlapping 4 ships, only one ship will be damaged of my choice. Overlapping indicates that a ship is overlapping something if it conducts a manoeuvre or moves in any way. This says to me that the first ship that moves through (movement template overlaps) or lands on the template will be the one taking the damage.

Yep. I just read that ? . Twice. I actually knew the answer but it didn’t click. The real question I meant to ask was, why does only one ship take the effect? Why not all?

Device rules in Rules Reference states that it only affects one target chosen by the person placing the device in the detonate section.

You're welcome. Slightly bummed since I was hoping to Talon roll drop a proximity mine on a swarm for the giggles. Atleast this way it reduces unintentional "friendly" fire.

From a "fluffy" standpoint, a Connor Net or Proximity Mine isn't actually as large as the template; that template simply designates the area that the mine threatens. When you drop a mine "onto" 2, 3, even 4 ships, that just means those are the potential targets it COULD affect - but as the bomber, you get to choose where you ACTUALLY threw it, and which ship ACTUALLY suffers the damage.

Bombs are different in that they're non-discriminatory: They go boom, and anything & everything around it pays the price, though that price is usually not nearly as severe as the mine: Usually only one hit, or ion effects, but not both.

Plus (as i found) you can damage Friends as well as foes with bombs. Not really with mines, UNLESS the ally stupidly goes over it!
