Crazy Innsmouth experience

By Brine, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I was playing a game using the Innsmouth expansion and something happened that made me love this game even more.

One of my investigators headed up to deal with Innsmouth (funny enough, it's Roland Banks). I go out to Devil's Reef to take care of the gates and monsters for several turns. Once things quiet down, I realize (having never played the expansion before) I can't get back without someone's help. So I have an encounter at Devil's Reef. "An empty rowboat drifts past...Move to Falcon Point and have an encounter." 'What great luck,' I think to myself; back to the mainland for me! So I take my encounter at Falcon Point. I draw the encounter where if you fail a speed check, some tentacle arms pop out of the water and drag you to Devil's Reef to have an encounter. I fail the check. SON OF A... Back to Devil's Reef I go. Draw my new encounter: I'm strangely compelled to leap into the water, so I have to draw ONE Innsmouth Look card. And guess what I draw? That's right! Roland Banks had a touch of The Look. Devoured!

Despite losing a character, I thought it was great how thematic it was.

Cool experience.

I do love how the game can "tell you a story" so often. I've had games where magician Dexter Drake keeps getting cursed and Miriam Beecher throws him out shouting they've marked him and Father Michael comes at him with a cross to drive him out of church. Obviously meddlling in magic tainted Dexter.

This reminds my cool experience in insmouth :) We played some easy-to-fight AOO with 3 investigators. 2 of us had top weapons and there were 2 doom tokens left to wake the AOO :) Don't know why, but i needed to go to Esoteric order of the dagon (AFAIR). Encounter says : xxx, draw one insmouth look card. I did. It devoured me (in fact, it changed me to Deep one). My brother laughed and said, that he will slay the Deep one, i had turned into. So he came to esoteric order of the dagon, killed the Deep one, had encounter with Innsmouth look and became a Deep one as well :D So in winned game, our 2 top killers became fish :) (and we lost the final fight i think :)

Stories like this are what make the game special IMHO.

This past week I got the Innsmouth expansion and during the third game we used it, the Mythos card we got from Turn Zero (the first one during set up) had the first player draw 2 innsmouth look cards and he got the look and became a Deep One. I thought it was flat out funny as we both started on the same location and I needed monster trophys for my story card.
