ROOCKIEBOY goes to the Spanish Nationals

By RoockieBoy, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Hi guys! Here's the batrep of my games at the Spanish Nationals. Hope you enjoy

I took this list:

Fenn Rau (68), Fearless (3)

Total 71

Guri (62), Outmaneuver (6), Advanced Sensors (8), Afterburners (8), Virago (10)

Total 94

Lando (Escape craft) (26), Tactical Officer (2)

Total 28

Total Points 193

ROUND 1 vs WEDGE, THANE, GARVEN (T-65), AP-5 at 199p

I gave him the initiative and my goal was to kill Wedge first. If I managed to kill him before Guri went down, she's capable of finishing what's left on the table.

Fenn and Lando deployed on my left, and Guri on my right, attempting to draw some attention.

IMG_8546.JPG

Rebels decided to split, to take on both scum ships. Garven and Wedge went after Fenn, while AP-5 and Thane turned on Guri.

Fenn dodged Garven's R1 I6 shot (Swarm Tactics from Wedge), but suffered a crit from Wedge at R2. Fenn then got a R1 Fearless shot on Garven, dealing 4 total damage, one of them being an Injured Pilot crit.

Guri used AS to avoid being shot by Thane and AP-5, but was also too far to contribute.

IMG_8548.JPG

Fuel leak on Fenn Rau

IMG_8549.JPG

Next turn Garven zooms past Fenn and focuses, as AP-5 had coordinated the action to flip the crit. Wedge goes slow to try and make Fenn bump, but I avoid it, and end up at R1 out of arc of Thane. I had dialed a 4s with Guri but it ended up not being a good move, so I BRd to my right with AS to get behind Thane and AP-5. Unfortunately I didn't have arc on Thane. Wedge and Garven both kill Lando, who does one damage on Garven before exploding...

IMG_8551.jpg

Fenn does 4 damage into Thane

IMG_8553.JPG

Next turn AP-5 banks left and Thane does a Tallon to try and catch Guri. I see it coming and do an AS Barrel Roll to my left, which makes mi 1 bank move bump into Thane to avoid being shot, granting me the arc on Garven, and my precious focus token. Wedge does a 3 hard and TLs Guri, who is at R2. Fenn did a 2 turn and boosted, ending at R1 of Wedge.

IMG_8554.JPG

Wedge gets 2 hits on Guri, who rolls blank, focus, evade. I decide to take the damage to save my focus for the attack. Fenn had a nice 5 die on Wedge, but I wasn't sure I could finish off Garven (2 hull left), so I went for Garven, and only got blank, blank, focus, so I spent it. Luckily he blanked, and Guri finished the job. AP-5 couldn't hurt Fenn.

IMG_8555.JPG

Next turn AP-5 does a 1 straight and coordinates Wedge to TL Guri. Then Thane does a 1 straight to clear stress and try to block Guri, so Wedge can have a R1 TL shot on Guri. Luckily my AS boost left with Guri clears, so I can do the 1 turn to the left and land at R1 of AP-5, and out of arc of both X-Wings. Fenn is blocked by Guri, but lands at R1 of AP-5 as well. It takes both ships to fire, but AP-5 goes down.

IMG_8557.JPG

A few turns later Guri finishes Thane but he's able to flip Fenn's fuel leak crit again before blowing up. So its both of my ships against Wedge. This is looking so good. Next turn it all gets complicated as I see a 4k coming from Wedge, and try to flank him from the side with a BR from Guri, but I put her too forward, and Wedge has arc on her... It's R1 and Guri lives hanging on 1 hull! Fenn takes both shields off Wedge.

IMG_8558.JPG

After last turn I get scared of losing Guri, and start playing defensively with her, which proves to be a huge mistake...

IMG_8559.JPG

With Guri down it's all 5 hull Wedge (he had hull upgrade) against 3 hull Fenn. We dance around a bit and with less than 10 minutes on the clock we finally get a R1 faceoff...

IMG_8562.JPG

Fenn only suffers one damage, but is now giving half points...

IMG_8560.JPG

But Wedge takes FOUR hits to the face, barely hanging on 1 hull...

IMG_8561.JPG

Less than 5 minutes on the clock and I realize I'm ahead on points, so I think I can win this by running away. My opponent plays really fast and so do I...

Time is called and dials are down so we play the last turn... and Fenn gets caught in a R3 TL+focus shot by Wedge...

IMG_8563.JPG

And I only get one evade! Fenn goes down and I lose...

Loss 169-200

P.S Last picture was taken after we had already started packing up, so the s-foils weren't really closed and Fenn's final position wasn't exactly there.

I love your batreps, man. Tough first game, and a bold squad choice. Wedge and Thane are practically a hard counter, geez.

Thanx man! I should have faced Wedge, but I was afraid of going into final salvo if we killed each other, as I had 8 dice and he had 11... I lost so much in the final turns the victory slipped through my fingers...

Wedge is really scary, and cheap! Thane only used his ability once in this game, and none in the other 2 games I faced him

Round 2 vs FENN/KETSU/ZUVIO

IMG_8566.JPG

I gave him the initiative so both Fenn and Guri could arc dodge enemy ships. Fenn and Lando deployed on my right, and Guri on my left. I went fast, and on 2nd round Guri blocked enemy Fenn, and had a R3 shot out of arc on Ketsu. My Fenn was at R2 of Ketsu, with a focus and a TL. Zuvio had no shot, and wasn't in a good spot for trying to tractor Fenn next round due to a rock. I shot Ketsu with both ships, and did 4 total damage. Then Ketsu did one damage on Fenn, and tractored him to my left, close to a rock, and ready to be shot by Zuvio, but I evaded it. Next turn Ketsu turned 3 to my left, and Fenn bumped her, but I was able to TL her with Lando's coordinate action. Guri was tractored by Zuvio, but I was able to use AS and miss the rock, while getting arc on Ketsu. Enemy Fenn did a Tallon, and didn't roll well on the attack. Between Guri and Lando, who survived! I did 3 more damage to Ketsu.

IMG_8567.JPG

Next turn Zuvio did a segnor, and enemy Fenn came back into the fight. Lando ran away, and Guri and Fenn got good shots on Ketsu, who lived on 1 hull. Ketsu had to rotate the arc to shoot, and did no damage to Fenn.

IMG_8568.JPG

Next turn it was pretty obvious Ketsu was going to drop the rigged cargo chute, but I needed to finish Ketsu this turn, so I just took it to the face with Fenn flying straight. Enemy Fenn got a R1 shot on Lando, while Guri got out of arc on Ketsu, while taking cover from Zuvio behind a rock.

IMG_8569.jpg

Lando bit the dust...

IMG_8570.jpg

But so did Ketsu...

IMG_8571.JPG

A few turns later I was able to clear Fenn's stress, and finish Zuvio with an awesome 5 hit attack by Fenn, while dodging enemy Fenn's arc.

IMG_8572.jpg

A few turns later my Fenn was able to arc dodge enemy Fenn, and finish him off with Guri's help.

IMG_8573.jpg

Win 200-28

Round 3 vs Wedge/Luke/Kyle

Both X-Wings had Proton Torpedoes (aren't they a little too good?) abd R3 so they could mantain 2 locks on different ships, which makes my life much more difficult cause I can't force them to switch targets.

I had to play Guri very defensively, and I arc dodged a lot, but didn't hurt the enemy much... I first went for a R3 shot on Kyle, but didn't even scratch the paint... Then Fenn went into a R1 shot head to head with Wedge, only to do TWO hits (hit + fearless in 5 dice). Wedge then went on to evade BOTH hits with natties! Awesome! Luckily Fenn only suffered one damage thanks to his 4 greens ability, the concordia face off and the focus token.

IMG_8575.JPG

Next turn I ran with Fenn, and entered the fray with Guri, but I ended in a bad spot, and both X-Wings had R1 shots on Guri...

IMG_8578.JPG

Blanking on defense didn't help either...

IMG_8579.jpg

Things went really hard from here. I decided to run away with Guri and go after Kyle, whose 2 dice turret didn't look too scary, but another nattie roll on Kyle's part and another blanks from Guri meant Fenn was on his own...

I was only able to kill Kyle with Fenn (I one-shotted him), and survive with half health Lando and half health Fenn when time was called...

Lost 157-53

Round 4 vs Wedge, Fenn, Arvel, Thane.

I deployed Guri in the middle of the board, opposite Arvel. Fenn and Lando on my left, and went zooming fast, trying to surprise as I saw Wedge had his wings closed. I figured I could maybe score a hit, as we would both roll 3 greens, but I would roll 3 reds to his 2.

IMG_8581.JPG

Numbers didn't work as he rolled 2 natties on the attcak, and I rolled blank, blank, focus, so I spent the focus on defense taking a hit still, and didn't do anything on the offense. bad trade there... At least Guri plinked a shield off Arvel at R3...

IMG_8582.JPG

Next turn Fenn did a 5 straight, which left him right behind Wedge and at R1 in the rebel Fenn. Guri bumped Arvel, as he had landed on a rock with a really bad move I didn't expect. Rebel Fenn used his ability to lock down my Fenn's focus, but between the 5 dice and Fearless, I did a total of 4 damage and he rolled 2 eyeballs, but his action had been to coordinate Wedge.

Next turn Guri killed Arvel with a R1 TL+Focus outmaneuvered shot as Arvel had already lost a shield hitting the rock the previous turn. Fenn did a 4k and killed rebel Fenn, not before taking another hit giving half points. Thane died soon after, and 3 ships against Wedge was not an easy task for the rebel hero, and Guri finished him off after a nice block from Lando.

IMG_8584.JPG

Win 200-49

So I ended up Flight 1 with a 2-2 record, but with 988 MOV, which was quite good. I had made day 2, but I still had to win both games by a large margin to be able to have a shot at the Top 32... (to be continued...)

Round 5 vs Jonus, 3x Scimitars, Whisper

The block of bombers deployed on my opponent's right corner, and Whisper right next to them, so I deployed Guri in front of all enemy ships, trying to bait a joust, while Fenn and Lando went on my right corner, trying to flank.

Enemy ships moved slow, and I rushed forwards. Guri did a 4s and a boost to the right, to keep my options open. Fenn did a 5s and boosted left, preparing for next turn's 5s.

IMG_8597.JPG

Next turn I did a 3 bank right with Guri in case I needed to run away, and as the bombers kept coming after her, I turned away. Lando coordinated a focus to Fenn Rau, and my 5s plus boost straight left Fenn in R1 in arc of a focus+evade Whisper.

IMG_8598.JPG

Fenn rolled well, and with the help of fearless I got 4 hits, so I decided to save my focus for defense. Whisper had to spend the evade and still lost both shields. Fenn didn't take any damage in return.

IMG_8599.JPG

Next turn 2 scimitars did a 4k, and Jonus plus another bomber turned into Fenn and focused. I did a 3 bank with Fenn towards the bombers to try and get behind them, while Guri got back into the fight. Lando threatened Whisper, who moved did a 2s.

IMG_8600.JPG

Fenn Rau's straight boost left him in a really good spot, as no barrage rockets would be fired this turn.

IMG_8601.JPG

Fenn rolled hot again and I was able to get 3 hits and a crit on Jonus, while saving my focus for defense.

IMG_8602.JPG

Fenn suffered no damage, and Lando only lost a shield to Whisper...

IMG_8603.JPG

But the Smooth-talking Gambler surprised everyone dealing a damage card to Whisper!

IMG_8604.JPG

Next turn I saw the 2s from the bombers coming so I dialed a 2 bank with Fenn, which left him in another great position. Lando had done a stop maneuver to block Whisper's 4k, but she turned in to threaten Guri, ending at R1 of a tokenless Lando. One of the scimitars turned towards Guri, and Jonus went straight, to keep in range of everyone. I decided to do an AS boost with Guri in order to bump the scimitar and avoid his shots, while getting cover from a near rock for Whisper's shot.

IMG_8605.JPG

Fenn Rau did 2 crits to a healthy bomber, taking no damage in return. Guri finished Jonus, and wasn't hit by Whisper so she didn't get the evade, and guess what? Lando got 3 natties into Whisper, killing her!

IMG_8606.JPG

Everything's going perfectly, I need to keep up this pace to wrap the game up and get the much needed MOV. Next turn all three bombers do a 4k. Guri gets into R1 of one of them, but the lock is on the injured one. Lando BRs to get closer to action. Fenn boosts and links to a focus, but I end up in a bad spot for next turn with that rock there...

IMG_8607.JPG

Both Guri and Fenn do some damage, but I can't finish any bomber. I still haven't taken any damage on my aces. Next turn Guri gets behind the 2 bombers, and is able to finish one of them...

IMG_8609.JPG

but Fenn had to go through a rock (no damage taken) and is still in range so the first Barrage Rocket is fired...

IMG_8610.JPG

...And 2 hits go through... so Fenn gives away half points. Lando is also hurt by a R1 bomber shot and loses his last shield. A big swing of MOV this turn... I should have been more careful...

IMG_8608.JPG

Next turn I make another mistake, and instead of going after the really wounded bomber (2 hull left) with Guri, I decide to TL and fire the healthy one, to make sure he spends his focus on defense. I guess I was trying to protect Fenn, but he just arc dodged the bombers so I lost a good R1 shot...

IMG_8611.JPG

Next turn I try to run away with Fenn but I'm unable to arc dodge the 2nd bomber, and another barrage rocket is fired... and Fenn suffers a weapons failure crit, hanging on 1 hull...

IMG_8612.JPG

Time is running out, and what looked like an easy game turned out to be a lot harder thanks to a couple bad decisions...

I take one turn to get into a better position (I had to BR with Lando in order to block Fenn's maneuver and avoid getting in arc of one bomber, while having shots on another) and last turn is called...

IMG_8613.JPG

I get the healthy bomber down to half health, but I'm unable to kill the wounded one. Luckily, both Fenn and Lando survive, so I don't bleed out more MOV...

Win 166-49

Round 6 vs Wedge, Luke, Shara:

I gave him the initiative and deployed Guri in front of his 3 ships, which were on his left corner. Fenn teamed up with Lando on my left.

My goal as always was to go after Wedge, as I knew if I took him down I'd have a lot of options with both Guri and Fenn in the end game, but first combat phase I get a R3 shot at Shara, and plink 2 shields with Fenn. Both X-Wings were too far.

Next turn I end up at R1 in narc with Fenn and purposely bump Guri into Shara while getting a TL on her with AS. Shara took a lot of damage as Fenn rolled pretty well once again.

A few turns later Guri disengaged and went after Shara, who was trying to run away with 3 hull left. I finally got her with an out of arc R1 TL+focus.

IMG_8615+%25282%2529.JPG

Fenn was having a hard time getting out of arc of both X-Wings, and ended up in a bad spot...

IMG_8616.JPG

I survived that turn, but was caught by a Proton torpedo the following turn, and Fenn blew up.

Lando followed a few turns later and Guri then had a really hard time fighting both X-Wings, with the only advantage being the X-Wings had only one proton left. I made a risky move that paid off, and Guri got a lucky shot on Wedge dealing a crit, which gave him 2 stress tokens. Last turn was called, and I was behind on points, and my only chance of winning was to finish Wedge. I did a fast move and used afterburners, getting a R2 shot out of arc on Wedge, that finally ended him...

IMG_8618.JPG (Wedge was where the stress token is)

So both Wedge and Shara were destroyed...

IMG_8619.JPG

And both Fenn and Lando also bit the dust...

IMG_8620.JPG

But as Guri was 1 hull away from giving half points, I won.

Win 125-99

So I had gone 4-2, but my last two games were closer than I needed, so my MOV wasn't high enough (61 points short), and I ended up 41st of something like 225 players or so, which isn't bad, but I'm getting tired of going 4-2 in big events and missing the cut every single time. It's time to step up!

Thanks for reading!
