My FLGS got two decks in for demo purposes, and I have stepped up at my FLGS to start demoing KeyForge before the November 10th Pre-Release and the November 15th Release
I have been a member of the FFG boom and bust cycle since Netrunner. I have fallen ill of following a meta of a LCG. The number of cards you must continue to maintain. It is just TOO much for the common hobby gamer. I would say the barrier of entry in LCGs and TCGs is too high for the common board game enthusiast.
KeyForge, does not have this problem, as barrier of entry is $10, or maybe even cheaper with retailer or FFG support for “first pack” rebate. “Play this game for $4” is a sweet and attractive tagline, but retailers would be eating the cost instead of maybe FFG helping their retailers out. I do not have a lot of experience with TCG model and FLGS, so if you do, please expand on this in the comments.
So, where does that lead to? We need outreach, and a lot of it, at the ground floor at your FLGS. Magic is entrenched. They our not our enemy, but they are the incumbents. The owner of my FLGS even gave me M:TG sleeves as they were extra. (I resleeved to not cause confusion, and this game is not M:TG)
Let's put it best this way: i don’t even have paper tokens to demo this game. They distributed only demo decks, and not cardboard chits. I have been using my Netrunner tokens, which don’t look appealing. I want plastic orange “Æmber” tokens so that when I am demoing the game is the best possible it can be. I want demo playmats.
Help FFG. I want this game to succeed to see the full potential of the Unique Deck Format and the KeyForge game.
If you are FFG, please help It’s Gametime in Culver City with KeyForge Demo and promotional material. He is an excellent FLGS owner and FFG product provider.
As for demoing I arrived at 7pm before 8pm FNM. My hope was to attract those who arrived early and I did. I demoed to Tim, and was able to get him in the game, and we even made to Key+1 Aember before he thought I "had too much of a board state" and that I "have it". I don't have enough experience playing, this was only my 3rd game of KeyForge ever, to know if my board state was any good at the time. KeyForge has a very different game loop and power curve over time because of the active house mechanic.
This game is EASY to teach, and get people in, but we need outreach. I'm willing to put in the demo time if FFG is willing to support demoing to real people at FLGSs
