Unfilled Rebel/Imperial Niches

By Piratical Moustache, in Star Wars: Armada

While we all wait for the next article on the SSD, why don't we discuss what the Rebels and Imperials are missing in their ship/squadron rosters.

Rebels need a new medium base ship, Imps need some small, cheap hammerhead equivalent.

Yes, another medium rebel ship would be great. I'd love to see a Quasar equivalent

Rebels could use a Raid squadron (like the Gauntlet) - perhaps the U-wing.

The Imperials could use a blue/black anti-ship dice bomber- perhaps the TIE/ca Punisher.

For the Rebel medium ship (looking at the med base carrier request) - maybe an MC40 based on the 600m version?

For the Imperial small ship request - the Vigil corvette, Tartan Patrol Craft, or the Customs Corvette would be good options

What you you think about a small-base (non-flotilla) freighter/transport?

The fact we still don't have a U-Wing breaks my heart every time. I need to finish my Blue Squadron!!! Also..... Gunboat ......

I'd also like to see a new flotilla option with different upgrades compared to what we have now.

Otherwise you guys nailed it with your lists

Do factions "need", something the other faction has? Is it good to remove the asymetry?

I think that the Rebels and Imperials can have the same relative niche filled but with their take on that niche.

For example the CR90 and Arquitens are both small ships that snipe at long range, but go about it in different ways.

I wouldn't mind if the Rebels had a squadron like the Decimator, although arguably the YT-2400 preforms that niche.

I would suggest the X4 Gunship (Canon),

latest?cb=20090924225852

or ILH-KK Citadel (Legends) to be the Rebel Decimator equivalent.

Imps don't have a long range Corvette (Arquiten is the imperial version of the Nebulon B and the hammer head is closer to the raider then the cr90). Imps also don't have a heavy bomber squadron

Rebels need a dedicated carrier for their squadron supremacy. And more variety in the middle ship range

The yt1300 was the rebel equivalent of the decimator or rather the Decimator was the imperial version of the yt1300

I know that the designers of Star Wars Galaxies described the Decimator as an evil Millennium Falcon, but in Armada gameplay their niche is different, one being a tough escort and the other an independent picket ship.

Dreadnought for both ( used to be a first choice when playing Starwars Supremecy for nostalgia's sake). Carrack light cruiser for Imps and I think its called a CC-7700 for Rebels, their very own Interdictor.

Except it’s canonically Imperial now. That’s right, we can steal things from you filthy Rebels too. ?

An Imperial ship that specializes in killing rebel squads!

Yes, but the gladiator is crazy expesive, and raiders pop like a bag of microwaved corn. Most likely what I want will never come to pass because for it to kill rebels the way I would like it will setam roll imp squads to the point of imbalance for tournament players. My problem is that I like the theme, I will play whatever faction my opponent is not. This dosen't work for tournament play. And that is the only format that matters when releasing new content (unfair bitter comment).

I have always thought a dedicated flak small base ship would be a good add, specially for the rebels, the Raider is a great flak boat though its lack of a redirect can obviously get it in trouble at times. when times well the raider is a powerful anti-squad force.

I think a rebel flak small base that punched out 2 blues and had a blah anti ship battery would be specialized enough to not be OP but help boost ship based anti squad options.

The Empire could also get a Carrack Light Cruiser too with similar builds.

Most importantly I would like to see a generic upgrade that goes in the weapons team slot that allows a 360 degree flak shot as one of your 2 attacks. It is less useful against ships that Gunnery team (offers no benefit) but better against squads than G. Teams.

Also have thought it would be interesting to see a comm jamming mechanic that blocks Comms Net token passing and Relay squad commands, maybe even blocking or reducing regular squads commands in a radius.

Of course the Neb seems to fit the bill. But, it just kind of falls short.

This was my thought as far as an anti-squad shipwent. I get that people hate the Tartan. I don't really care about the model. My thought was that the

TRCR-90 has become the ultimate sniper, so let's give the Empire the ultimate squad killer. This was a rough idea so harsh criticism will not be met with offense. I was also thinking about a title that allowed an anti squad attack after movement and another that allowed a 360 degree anti squad attack during normal timing as well.

I'm just going to go ahead and say it...

Yuuzhan Vong faction coming to Armada... who needs more Rebel/Imp ships, lets get some space coral of death action going around here.

Combat gr75 is a great flak boat

There already exists a ship with the capability of hitting all squads in arc with 2 rerollable black dice, and either stop them from getting away, or picking another to take another 2 black rerollable... Or it can basically halve it’s damage to activate them so they can’t run away.

and base It’s even the same points as presented.

Raiders. Use them.

Problem is that people want an anti-squadron ship that doesn't need to be supported by squadrons. Which is pretty much impossible.

It’s absolutely possible with what you already have available... more so for the Empire than the Rebels.

People want a solution they don’t need to think about how to use, where to position, when to strike, or how to otherwise invest in a layered response.

They just have a revulsion for fighters and want them to go away, on both sides.

Whereas there is no simple solution - nor should there be one.

Invest in your layered defense, and you will make up the points spent.

Invest in your overwhelming offense, and gamble it that way.

If you are wanting to ignore a portion of the game, then at least be willing to take what it takes to do so... that’s all I ask.
