Mantis Shugenja School Question

By Nheko, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

Under the Mantis Shugenja School it reads:

Techniques Available: Air and Water Invocations (), Rituals (), Shūji ()

Does that means that the School is limited to those two elements? I haven’t received my book yet sadly so I don’t have any other Shugenja School to compare it to...

I would say yes, and that it was a purposeful move to lock the Mantis seers as related only to the air and water kami. The only time you can purchase techniques not listed in that splash is when they're included in school curriculum with the little diamond symbol.

Thanks! I feel a relief now that I overlooked Fury of Osano-wo.

You'll see that little diamond a lot in the core book. It essentially means that the normal pre-reqs don't apply. It's commonly used to give schools some ninjitsu flavoring, or to give schools access to high rank techniques earlier than others would.

I like it. ?

The way curricula work create some interesting paths for experience. The locked techniques that are not normally available can only be purchased while training in that rank if that trait isn't otherwise available, as opposed techniques that can just be purchased early. So Fury of Osano-Wo has to be purchased while exploring Rank 3.

Good to know. "On the list" doesn't mean, "available from this point on," but "only while at this point"?

Correct! The rule is on pg. 97 under Restrictions and Prerequisites. It explicitly says "for the current rank in their curriculum" for privileged access.
