Need advice on painting 3Dprinted asteroids -updated picture

By C Vic20, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hi, I have printed these asteroids, and textured them with glue and sand. Then I primed them with grey primer. But what do I do now? I'm not sure how I should finish them. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Here is the finished result. Thanks for your advice everyone! These are now available for sale.

This guy has a pretty good tutorial on making asteroids. You can skip past the building stage and just watch the part about painting.

Choose 2 or 3 colors* and "blotch" them onto the rocks. Be messy; it's okay, just don't have it so wet that the paint is runny.

Let that dry, then do a wash. A watered down black or dark brown should work since they are just "set dressing," but if you want to spend the $ you can use Citadel's Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil.

Let that dry, then dry brush with a lighter color, a tan or medium gray. That should do it.

*find colors that are similar to the ones on the printed asteroid tokens.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm concerned about putting on too much paint and covering up the texture. I like the idea of matching the colors on the templates.

Since I'm offering these for sale on my Facebook store, maybe I should offer to prime them in black or dark brown. Or should I sell them fully painted perhaps?

for a lot of the smaller holes,to make them look deeper then they are, I suggest filling some with black paint.

Also, considering a lot of asteroids are rumored to contain Iron as a main source of material, here is a nice color pallet to follow.

This is pictures of some Iron Ore, obviously dont use it on ALL of the asteroid, but in areas would look good.

I like to keep mine simple. After priming, I paint them with a dark gray. Then, I lather on the dark wash. Finally, I dry brush the whole thing with a light gray.

Thanks so much for the feedback! I will be testing some different painting techniques and posting the results here. After some more thought it occurred to me that one of the reasons X-Wing is so popular is that no painting or assembling is required. I will look into the possibility of having these fully painted and assembled, ready to use right out of the box.

I finally had time to try my hand at painting one of my asteroids. As per one of the suggestions I tried to go with the colour palette of the tokens from FFG. Mine is a bit darker but I think it turned out pretty well. For some reason it is not letting me upload any pictures. So you will have to check my facebook page or BGG for the pictures until I can figure out how to upload them here. Got a picture up!

That looks real nice; I think you got the texture to come out nicely.

Thanks! I'm working on a design for debris fields next. Since I really can't use ships because they are copyrighted, I am designing some space station debris.

I have updated the first post with a picture of the finished set of asteroids.
