Range 0 at deployment?

By emeraldbeacon, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If I deploy two ships so that their bases are physically touching, are they considered to be at Range 0 as the game begins... or are they technically Range 1, as the two ships never actually "overlapped"?

My reason for asking: I'm thinking of running Tobias Beckett on an escape craft, use his ability during setup, then dock him during the round 1 system phase, before my YT-1300 even has a chance to move out of the way... if I start with the shuttle docked, then Beckett, who is in reserves, never has a chance to take effect.

They would be at range 0. No idea if that is a legal set up. I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be ok to do.

Range 0 happens whenever two ships are touching. They don't necessary have to have "crashed". The rules reference even points out that it's possible (though unlikely) to be at range 0 without an incomplete maneuver.

So, if you start two ships parallel to each other at range 0, then move them both straight the same distance, both ships will complete their maneuvers but they'll still be at range 0.

Yes they'd be at R0. R0 isnt the 1.0 rule of "overlapping result" that we had before, where if they overlapped last turn, moved in perfect unison, and ended still touching but never actually overlapped they wouldnt be considered "touching" per rules.

Its a lot less confusing now, in fact the way i worded that is probably confusing as **** but thats a 1.0 interaction anyway so dont worry about it.

R0 /= Bumping in 2.0 but is the result of bumping. You can be R0 now w/o bumping.

So my Beckett tactic does technically work. Deploy at R0, move a rock during setup, then dock in the first system phase. ?

Yep! And, as far as I can tell, it's the best place to put him, since it lets him take a crew slot that is otherwise not particularly useful.

You can also pair it nicely with the autopilot drone to burn off some charges at the beginning of the game. Then, later, launch and explode before anyone has a chance to shoot it. (Since they're clarified that it doesn't explode unless removed by its own ability.)

Except that the Autopilot Drone has no crew slots. :D

It would've been a bit.. cruel to put a crew member on that thing, wouldn't it? " Hang tight in there, it was an honour and all, you know..."

Bwahaha. No, sorry, I meant the start-undocked-at-range-0 strategy works with Autopilot Drone. It'd be quite alarming if it had a crew slot. :D
