acrimony? it is following me everywhere I go on the internet? does it have a knife? just relax, pal. roll some percentage dice, subtract twenty and take a deep breath.

I noticed you were warned for personal attacks after just your 3rd post over at RPGnet.

Let's not bring RPGnet moderation into this!

I would've been happy to leave inter-forum shenanigans out of it altogether! angel.gif

Dear HA, I am sorry you are feeling attacked. if i could i would give you a big hug corazon.gif . seriously, i am not out to fight with you. i am new to reading forums period, i played wfrp 1ed and i have a ton of wfrp2nd books (my pals were way too into HERO to even give it a chance at the time) laying about, but going online and sorting troll from sincere hobbyist is tricky. i think i prefer arguing with people in person. from now on, all i am going to give you is all of my love if you say something interesting and helpful, or ignore you if you don't. i already admitted i am no saint, but i am trying to reform brother. no grudges.

xxoo

your gentle and ever affectionate,

Bindlespin

Thanks for explaining.

Please keep your posts related to topics presented or commentary about the game or corresponding post, not sniping or ad hominem attacks and antics against others. There are plenty of other forums for that sort of activity.

Fair enough. If you stick with WFRP you'll probably warm up to StS eventually.

You're probably right.

Understood. But as long as your attention is here, what do you think about the original post? It was directed at you and your development team..

Hello everyone,

I am back from a business trip and wow ! Tons of posts !

My simple goal for this thread was simply to see if anyone else than me also would use some extra examples of play. Skill tests, effects fo a fall, competitve tests using different difficulty for each contestant, etc. Since we will surely wait for a good while before ynnen responds to this (no offence), maybe we could all pitch in some in game examples of rulings either we did in our games, or others that we would consider using in the future.

EXAMPLE #1 - Bourne Identity

Jojen the Thief is escaping on the rooftops of Altdorf, his sling bag full of loot. The watchmen are hot on his tail and some of them have crossbows ! Jojen decides to jump off the roof and aim for an open window one story lower... The weather is rainy, and the roofs are wet. Jojen's bag is loosely strapped and quite heavy...

Jojen speeds up to make the jump this round because he has seen that the crossbowmen are levelling their weapons. His initiative slot plays before them, but he needs 2 manoeuvres to get to the ledge (close and engage) and jump in one round. He takes one fatigue. The GM (that's me) judges that the extra speed on the wet roof makes the jog dangerous and asks for a Average (2d) Coordination test. Jojen has Agility 4 and 1 Fortune and has trained Coordination once. The GM adds a misfortune die for the failing sunlight. Jojen's Stance is 2R, he rolls 4 Challenges, 2 Boons and one Comet ! Net result: 3 Challenges and 2 Boons. So Jojen fails miserably, but is lucky in some way.

The GM and player decide that Jojen runs over the top of the roof and slips and slides on the other side, thus disappering from the crossbowmen's view. He stops just at the edge of the fall, both feet in the goutière...

As he comes to his senses, he clearly hears the watchmen getting closer... The alley is narrow, he could make it even with out a runup if he jumped for the window right there and now... The Watch sergeant is an old enemy who will not spare him this time... Jojen mutters a prayer to Ranald and jumps mightily.

The GM rules that the jump is so hard as to be a Daunting (4d) Athletics test. Jojen has Strength 4 and has expertise in Athletics. He adds his three fortune points to the roll. The light coming from the target window helps a bit, so the GM adds one more. He rolls 3 Successes (+2 Fatigue), 1 Comet, 4 Boons, 1 Bane and 4 Challenges. All his successes come from Characteristic, Stance and Expertise and all his Boons from Fortune. Net result: 1 Challenge, 1 Comet and 3 Boons. (Jojen's player did not convert the Comet to a success, since he would fail anyway.)

The GM rules that the 3 Boons are enough to make get him across the alley and the Comet makes him hit the window, but much too low. The impact causes some damage, as Jojen's arms hit the window sill and shutters violently. The GM rolls 3 Challenge dice to determine damage. He adds 3 Fortune dice to reflect Jojen's investment of luck in this action. He obtains a net result of 3 Challenges and 1 Chaos Star ! Jojen takes 3 Wounds and 1 Critical !

Jojen is barely hanging from the window sill, bloodied and in pain... Unfortunately for him, the Old World isn't Hollywood...

let me make sure I understand you:

during encounter mode you want Jojen to make two checks, one for running across a rainslick roof, and the second for jumping through a window in a nearby building. fun!

Jojen makes a coordination check first and nets three challenges and two boons. I might rule that he falls off the roof and lands on Bildo, a halfling headed home with pie in hand. Jojen breaks line of sight but makes the story more complicated by angering Bildo who now joins the chase and throws rocks at Jojen. (maybe because it was a major fail. if the player rolled a chaos i might turn Bildo into Grak, a drunken trollslayer trying to sleep it off in an alleyway who is now itching for a fight).

Let's say Jojen makes it to the other end of the roof and tries to jump. If the player narrates what he is doing I would let him use "Perform a Stunt." So let's say he uses "PoS" and nets one challenge, one comet, and three boons. Jojen jumps as hard as he can and he hits the wall of the opposite building and slides down it, landing on Bildo. He failed, but again he walks away unhurt and this time Tim, one of the watchmen chasing him, who is distracted by the awesome stunt Jojen attempted, loses his footing and falls off the roof landing on his head (the comet maybe). this might actually turn out worse for Jojen because now he is going to get charged with murder and not just burglary.

i am new to gming and i just want players to know that no matter what craziness i narrate, as long as they net one success they succeed; if they don't they fail. boons, banes, comets, chaos all add to the story if the action is interesting, or just add mechanical stuff if the action isn't interesting at all. i think there are a lot of ways to resolve these tasks and i think that is great.

That's basically the way I would play it also. Successes/Challenges determine if the intended action succeeds. Boons and Banes (CS and Comets also), just add dramatic elements to the ongoing action. Storytelling material.

Anybody else care to contribute another in game example ?
