Triple Vipers

By NeonWolf, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've always thought the StarViper was a cool ship and I've loved the maneuverability of it, however in 1.0 it just wasn't worth tying to run 3 in a list. Now with 2.0 and the apparent usefulness of Proton Torpedoes, I'm wanting to try a Triple-Viper list. Looking for feedback on this build:

StarViper -class Attack Platform - Black Sun Enforcer - 58
Black Sun Enforcer - (46)
Fire-Control System (3)
Proton Torpedoes (9)

StarViper -class Attack Platform - Black Sun Enforcer - 58
Black Sun Enforcer - (46)
Fire-Control System (3)
Proton Torpedoes (9)

StarViper -class Attack Platform - •Guri - 81
•Guri - Prince Xizor’s Bodyguard (62)
Daredevil (3)
Advanced Sensors (8)
Afterburners (8)

Total: 197/200

I like predator on Guri. Otherwise looks fun!

Daredevil + Advanced Sensors is interesting although I'm not sure the Star Viper has enough blue to make it as cool as it could be.

Funny. I ran 3 ‘Vipers a bunch of times in 1.0 and had a lot of fun; I even took Tweek/Guri/Dalan to the Seattle Regional.

If anybody wants to trade for the full conversion for a Viper (dial, 2 base tiles, 4 pilot cards), I have the full conversion for the Kimogila waiting for you. ?

I liked FCS for them in 1.0, but now that they have to do a TL action to get it, I am way less enamoured with it. The bendy BR + Adv Sensors gives you a ridiculous amount of placement + move options.

Guri’s biggest issue in 1.0 was PS. Now that she has an ace-level initiative, she is that much better.

Some are touting the joys of Super Guri, but I don’t think you could fit 2 other ‘Vipers of worh in the list.

With 7 out of 16 maneuvers being blue I thought it might work out, especially with the shenanigans you can do with the barrel roll and boosts placements.

I went with FCS since I will need a Lock to use the Proton Torpedoes. They seem to be strong at the moment and the Starviper isn't a platform that I think people expect to see them on.

What, exactly, is "Super Guri"?

Super helpful feedback, thanks... ?

You may find that SVs are vulnerable on the initial approach and you want a focus/calculate for defence in the same turn you want a lock to fire the torp.

SuperGuri involves loading her up to >100 pts.: title, shield, outmanuever, plus more.

Definitely be interested to hear if people can get this to work.

I've looked at Guri with 2 BSAs, all with AS and Outmanoeuvre, but feel like I3 on a 5 health ship will see one (or both) of Guri's wingmen evaporated early, then it's an uphill struggle. Especially with no bid, in this case.

Pro Torps is an interesting variant as you might have the early firepower to even the odds.

One alternative I almost immediately dismissed because of squishyness, was all 3 named pilots. Purely for the higher Initiative and leveraging their manoeuverability.

I'd love to be convinced that one of 1.0s most lovely lists can be something more than casual hijinks.

It is super helpful if you look at the video. It shows you three vipers can be a menace. The player took the three named vipers, not for their ability, but for their PS. arc dodge, arc dodge arc dodge. Not joust with proton torps.

Using vipers as proton torp carriers is probably a bad call because Vipers are not jousters and their linked actions are focus/calcs. You will be barrel rolling a lot and not target locking, and if you target lock, you have no focus and cant barrel roll and will die. You will need to spend a couple turns setting up the lock and turning around and then firing, all while being Initiative 2.

Three named vipers, all with adv sensors. Nobody, even higher Initiative will know where your vipers will end up. Good luck to any swarm trying to get all guns on them.

Yeah - not saying that's bad. A blue turn would be the icing on the cake though :)

Fair enough. I had wondered about their vulnerability and thought perhaps getting into the obstacle field as soon as possible might help with that.

Interesting, I would have to borrow cards to be able to actually field this list.

That it would.

That's pretty smart looking. Still might need to be the best pilot in the galaxy to pull it off. Might be worth dropping a pred or 2 for a small bid? Perhaps Crack Shot instead? Lining up a double Crack might be doable and drop some real hurt at a key moment.

Perhaps, Im not fond of predator on the PS4 vipers, so maybe go crackshot for a small bid in case you go up against PS4 Tie Swarm or something. Or maybe trickshot on all 3. With adv sensors you can hide behind debris for extra defense and get more red dice. Good strategy against Jonus bombers or whatnot if you cant get out of their arc.

What about Marksmanship instead of Crack/Trick Shot?

If you still have the original Viper dials they're exactly the same except there's actually more blue on the new dials so you don't need to throw out the old ones I had the same problem
