The Bonefang Grill

By theBitterFig, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Dace Bonearm with Ion Torpedo Fang Fighters.

  • Dace Bonearm (Squad Leader, Tactical Officer, Moldy Crow) 54
    • The entire premise of the list is using Dace Bonearm, so he's mandatory. Would a Palob/Fenn/Kad list also be good? No doubt. It'd probably be better than this list. But it wouldn't be a Bonefang Grill, now would it?
    • I figure attempting to leverage his identical Init to Kad Solus is also probably handy, so I went with the Squad Leader, TacOff combo to coordinate my fellow ships. Giving Locks and Focuses to ships who are interested in firing Torpedoes seems wise.
      • While there is some unresolved discussion, I've been among those arguing that when a Fang is coordinated by a SqLd HWK without Engine Upgrade, it can perform a white boost. I mean, Boba with Han Gunner can't perform two focus actions, so clearly there's some kernel of a focus action which exists between red and white As such, I view Squad Leader as difficulty agnostic. That's all I've got to say in this thread, other discussion should be held in the rules subforum.
  • Fenn Rau (Outmaneuver, Ion Torpedoes) 80
    • Ion Torpedoes are going to be pretty mandatory in a list like this, designed to exploit Dace's ability.
    • Since the intent is to ionize an opponent and make their move predictable, Outmaneuver seems right to me. If you know exactly where an opponent will be, Fenn can hopefully slip into Range 1 out-of-arc for a deadly follow-up attack. 5-dice vs reduced agility is killer.
  • Kad Solus (Elusive, Ion Torpedoes) 63
    • Kad loves to do red moves, and he'll always have a focus token when he does, so Elusive seems like a natural fit. The rerolls are much better when you have a focus token. A cool trick: Dace can coordinate Kad before his red move. Kad could easily wind up with Lock, Focus, Focus, Elusive. Alternately, Dace could Boost Kad if his red move is going to be blocked.
  • Total 197, bid 3.
    • The bid isn't large, and could easily be smaller. While I don't believe Engine Upgrade is necessary for Squad Leader, it'd be nice to have on Dace, since White boosts are pretty nice on their own. The HWK doesn't have a K-Turn, so a 2-Hard + Boost is as quick as it can turn around.
    • If I had to scrap anything from the list, Outmaneuver could easily be dropped to Predator or Fearless. Personally, I think I'd rather go Predator (out of arc > in arc at range 1, and the damage from each is pretty similar when they trigger).
    • Kad could be replaced with Joy Rekoff or a Skull Ace, but I think he'll be worth it.

Put it on the table. Fangs: good, Bone: Meh. This was kind of to be expected. I fired three Ion Torpedoes, put an A-Wing into one Ion move (and my opponent was able to coordinate a Boost, so Fenn couldn't take advantage), and twice just did a single damage. Dace died pretty early, but got a massive Range 1 4-hit attack against Riz Ahmed, because 4-hit attacks are things that HWKs do now (his other two attacks missed). What a strange new world we live in. Coordinate wasn't bad, but wasn't really vital. In my experience, Coordinate and Red Linked Actions don't always play well together.

Anyhow, The two Fangs flew around and eventually whittled down the rest of the list. I probably won't fly the list again.

I'd totally be down for some Palob Godalhi (Elusive, L3-37, Engine Upgrade will be the first loadout I try), or maybe just triple Fangs.

  • Fenn Rau with Outmaneuver.
    • Dude is BEASTLY. Boost in and Focus, roll 5 dice to their reduced agility. I think I only made one attack where it didn't trigger. There were a few turns I was shot at without a return shot, but it felt good. If feels like Season 2 Rebels when he's tearing apart Phoenix Squadron.
  • Kad Solus with Elusive.
    • The synergy is just too strong to pass up.
  • Old Terroch with Fearless.
    • He has to be in arc anyhow, so might as well use it. I generally think Fearless is kind of a trap, that I'd rather get out-of-arc and be safe from incoming fire. But Old T's ability doesn't allow him to do that, so Fearless seems right.
