Corran and console fire

By Gokuja04, in X-Wing Rules Questions

What the rule on Corrans 2nd bonus shot at initiative 0?

Rules reference say each ship only engages once, but also say each ship may perform one attack during the engagement phase.

Corrans ability clearly happens within the engagement phase but is treated as a bonus attack which normally happens right after a ships first attack and the ship does not engage a 2nd time for the bonus shot. Corrans just seems to be an extended bonus shot.

After discussing with my xwing group that leads us to assume that you do not roll for console fire on Corrans bonus shot.

Thoughts?

Yes I think you would have to roll for console fire if you fired with Corran for his bonus shot, I think that would be the case for any bonus shot from a ship (a ship with Han Gunner for instance), but I guess it depends on how you understand the word engagement here.

Easy solve with Corran is just don't take that 2nd shot ?

Console fire stats "before you engage," not before the engagement phase, so anytime you engage another ship (no matter the how or why) you roll for console fire.

Rules Ref, Engagement Phase:

-Each ship engages only once during this phase.

I tend to think that Corran's attack isn't engaging. Let's look at the text. It doesn't instruct Corran to engage a second time, it gives a timing window (initiative 0) and allows him to perform some kind of effect (a bonus attack). A bonus attack is--by definition--necessarily an attack which happens outside your engagement.

My interpretation is that Console Fire would not trigger.

I'm more than happy to be wrong as someone who runs Corran :)

theBitterFig is right.

Engaging gives you an attack but you can attack without engaging.
That's the same with every bonus attack, you don't engage when you do those.

This is like activating. It gives you an action, but doing an action does not requires you to activate.

Corran doesn't engage twice, he engages ones and attacks a second time.

he's not engaging at init0, just like Han gunner isnt engaging at I7

its a bonus attack.

It's the same with one of my favorite gimmick squads right now: Roark Garnet with Leebo + Han Gunner. Roark lets Leebo engage at Init 7; Han gives Leebo an Init 7 bonus attack. While Leebo's initiative stays at 3, I choose to engage at 7. Once that engagement is finished, I then take Han's bonus shot at 7. While this second, Han shot still triggers any "while you attack" effects, it does not actually count as an engagement.

Thanks for the responses. I agree that Corran would not roll as part of the bonus attack but when we were discussing it we weren't 100% sure
