I'm unclear in how this special ability works. Does the defender still get to roll defence dice or does this take place before they roll?

While you perform an attack, you may spend 1 result. If you do, deal 1 facedown damage card to the defender, then cancel you remaining results.

Spending results is a dice modification, so this happens during your Modify Attack Dice step, well before the defender rolls.

Seyn Marana works a lot like Wampa of old (not to be confused with 2nd Ed Wampa): After you roll attack dice (and before your opponent rolls defense), as part of your dice modification step, you can cancel a critical result to auto-deal one damage card, instead of going through the process of the full attack. This is especially potent when you use them with the rest of Inferno Squadron, given how many of their abilities trigger off of "a damaged opponent" (meaning hull damage). A great upgrade for Seyn is Marksmanship , which is reasonably inexpensive, and quadruples your chances of landing a critical result against someone in your bullseye.

Yes she goes through shields.

Shes arguably much deadlier than 1.0 Wampa because of Marskmanship being actionless now.

Put someone higher Init with Swarm tactics alongside for maximum lol.

It's super janky and requires a 9-planet syzygy to get all of the components to work in one round but Rexler with Juke, Howl with Swarm Tactics, Del with Swarm Tactics, and Seyn with Marksmanship is a pretty mean list with a few points spare for some extra upgrades. The chances that you get everything to work successfully and have the target still do a meaningful attack after you've done it are low though.

To be fair, even I4 isn't bad. She's incredibly cheap and anyone caught boresight is taking some pain, no matter how many green dice and tokens they have. It makes her a great medium and large based ship hunter - especially for high green dice bigger ships like IG-88 (because it's easy to line up a boresight on a bigger base, and with only 4 hull, 1 face-down damage card is actually quite scary for an aggressor....)

I have slapped her (uh..phrasing?) into several lists randomly and she has done work. Lot of my friends hate her right now lol

Inferno Squadron as a whole is a nasty little team. Add in Howlrunner and a 6th TIE, and you're pretty dang solid.
