Deathfire and mines

By Storgar, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok deathfire drops or launches upon death.

rules ref say mines can be dropped or launched.

new pinned thread for rules says deathfire cannot launch devices that cannot normally be launched.

this leads me to think deathfire can launch a mine but cannot launch things like rigged cargo (if he could have it) or other such devices that appear in the future.

is this correct?

also when he does launch a bomb or mine, what template does he use, TS uses a 5 straight but he does not have that?

None of the devices currently in the game can normally be launched (i.e. their cards don't say 'launch' anywhere on them), so DF cannot launch them when he dies.

If you managed to die in the systems phase you could use your Trajectory Simulator to launch a bomb though.

You could, if you had one, but you're a TIE/sa, so you don't.

I also don't think you can die in the systems phase.

I'm sure there's a way someone will work out.

Certainly, any ship with Cloak and Collision Detector can do it, but that's not one that can also be Deathfire.

Deathrain (who I was thinking of before) can do it if he's a very special boy with a Collision Detector.

It does clearly say in the rules reference though that mines can be dropped or launched during the system phase. Now TS specifically says bombs so it rules out mines, but deathfire says launch device and a mine is a device that can be launched as the rules ref says so.

So why not?

Because you can't launch Proximity Mines and Conner Nets. If they make a device you can launch then go wild.

You still have to follow the 'deployment' rules on the upgrade cards themselves.

All current bombs and mines give instructions on how they're placed on the board, and all of them only only them to be dropped with the 1 straight template.

Some abilities and upgrades allow you to override this. Trajectory Simulator, for example says if you would drop or launch a bomb, you may launch it... instead.

I.e. If a card instructs you to drop a bomb, this card lets you launch it instead.

Deathfire has no such language. He just lets you drop or launch a device, as specified on their cards, if you are destroyed. His ability is an exception to the usual timing window, not to the normal device rules.

Ok thanks that make sense now

I don't understand why it is an issue to launch a mine (which is a device) upon Deathfire's death at all. All devices (currently) may only be dropped 1 straight back, yet there are numerous exceptions to this where all bombers ships say they can instead be soft turn drops, or "skilled bomber" upgrade allows an increase or decrease in distance by 1, and of course the "trajectory" allows a "bomb" to be launched 5 forward (which is yet another exception to the normal device rules that specifically state may only be dropped on the card), so why would Deathfire's ability suddenly be the "only" exception?

If it is a question of being "too good", um... you are "losing a ship" in order to do this "once per game" ability!... so why not? The fact that it specifically words "can drop or launch a device" whereas other cards specifically state "can launch a bomb" sounds to be like they knew what they were doing at the time this cards design? If deathfires' card said Drop or launch a device "as instructed by the rules of the device" (like GuacCousteau implied it does) then I would say sure, but it doesn't say that at all.
