The Mandalorian (Eventual spoilers will apply)

By Nytwyng, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I was near-jubilant when TCW established that the mandalorians who venerated the Kotor-era warrior culture were mostly fringe lunatic psuedo-fascists. Rebels backtracked this a little, but kept the fringe elements as the ones collaborating with the empire and the more moderate factions in more or less open rebellion against the same.

I'll probably rub some people the wrong way by bringing politics into their star wars (newsflash: there was always politics in star wars) but I'm hoping they don't throw around mando warrior culture as something unquestionably good and honorable as, if we look past a few centuries of romantic sanitation every historic example that we could call a warrior culture has been, on the whole, a ridiculously oppressive society. While it's fairly easy to look up to the idealized individual honorable knight/samurai/gentleman as a paragon of integrity, courage and honesty you have to remember that in reality such ideals lead to societies that venerated a highly toxic honor culture, where you were expected to demand satisfaction or death for every slight, perceived or real or else risk being shunned by family or society.

And it's not like we've completely outgrown it, even in the "enlightened" western world.

Eh, at least Rebels depicted the mandalorians as refreshingly unbothered by gender, so even if we get hit full on in the face with chauvinistic mandalorian warrior culture, it's quite likely we'll be spared the worst of the misogynistic aspects of it.

...

So that was a bit of rant, but I'm not going to make excuses for being more than a little bothered by people who can't separate the virtues of honesty and integrity from the often wildly toxic concept we call "honor".

It's set about 7 years after ANH or the end of ROTJ?

Could be applied to neither as the New Republic doesn't come across as that competent so maybe they deliberately limit their influence to worlds of interest to them, but Mon Mothma is currently leading the NR isn't she?

Seven years after ANH, so three years after RotJ. That's straight from Jon Favereau.

Nice bit of nostalgia there, but the titular Mandalorian is certainly not Boba Fett. Favereau’s previous post, as well as numerous other official statements have made it clear that this show will be about all new characters, not ones we already know.

There's a truly staggering amount of cynical, angry and outright dumb comments in this thread when nearly nothing is known about the show yet... That's a new low of this forum to me. Maybe cool it with the doomsaying till we actually see the first episode ourselves, or is that too much to ask nowadays on the internet?

Either way, what little we HAVE seen so far is looking amazing to me. I'll definitely give this show its fair shake when its finally time...

10 million an episode should be f-in amazing production qualitity.

Re-read the thread and really didn't pick up on anything staggering. If my own post about hoping they're not Bounty Hunters contributed to your opinion I apologise. I'll likely love the series even if they're the Bountiest Huntery Bounty Hunters who ever Hunted Bounties.

Nah, something like not wanting a Bounty Hunting plot? Sure, that's a fine opinion/hope to express. I'm mostly along for the ride myself. What really annoys me is the few who threw around a bunch of older tropes, act as if their appearance would make the show awful by existing alone, and somehow think they're still contributing to the conversation.

As opposed to the guy crapping on their sharing of their preferences? I know which one I think adds nothing of value, and I've quoted it above. People should share their opinions on what they hope to see/not see, and from a gaming site, that can be good insight when running a game (or making a character for a game) on what to include and what to skip.

Just as long as Scott Buck isn't involved. I point to Inhumans and Iron Fist Season 1 for why he needs to stay away from Star Wars. I didn't forget about Dexter, but that really just makes things oddly confusing. We didn't get the best of Scott Buck from Dexter in Iron Fist and there was no hint of that Scott Buck anywhere near Inhumans.

On the other hand, the crew who did the much improved Season 2 are now free to pursue other projects. ?

That is true and I wouldn't be surprised if they already drew from teams that have done the Marvel Netflix series.

Bleh. I'll reserve judgment, but I've always been bored by all things Mandalorian. Hopefully it won't be thinly veiled Fett-worship.

I've always been bored with all things Boba Fett. I found Jango somewhat interesting, and I loved the Sabine arcs in "Rebels", so I'm hoping this show goes more down that path. But Boba Fett? Yeah...right there with you. He makes one lucky guess, then gets taken out by a blind guy with a stick.

Kind of like Luke's piloting ability. We keep getting told what a great pilot he is, but all we really see is one Force-laden lucky shot, and just about every other time he's in the cockpit he crashes! His piloting record is up there with Deanna Troi's! :)
