Which tokens are now obsolete in 2.0?

By krechevskoy, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I am swapping out my 1.0 to 2.0 cardboard in the conversion kits. I am noticing some pilots missing, but will save that topic for another post.

I am trying to see what I can still keep from X-wing 1.0. The pilot cards and dials are easy to see they are completely replaced. But the tokens not so much.

Which tokens are now obsolete, and which tokens are now just "face lifts" of the original tokens?

So ordnance tokens look to be out due to "Standard Charges", but that is the only token I do not see that has some sort of token "replacement".

I like the look of the "1.0" stress tokens better than the 2.0 am I technically not allowed to use those tokens, or are they still viable as they essentially look the same.

Though I do like the look of the new tokens, it makes them look like icons on a car dashboard.

Thanks!!

By token:

  • Greens:
    • Focus , Evade , and Reinforce tokens are mechanically identical: they're all green and round, and feature basically the same symbols.
    • Calculate , obviously, is a brand-new token type, so you'll need those.
  • Blues:
    • Cloak tokens have a different shape, but remain blue, so I guess you're still good there.
    • Shields are a questionable subject. You're supposed to flip shields from their blue side to red as they're spent; you could simply remove shield tokens instead of flipping them, though, or color in your shields red on one side.
  • Reds:
    • Locks will require some finagling to work. Technically, they're supposed to match the ID number of your ship token... but many place a blue lock on their ship base, then use the existing red lock to denote targets.
    • Stress tokens are indeed red, but they're triangular, not square. A later effect could target square tokens, and that might be a problem.
    • Ions are still red, but they're a fairly round token in 1e, which could lead to some confusion with newer players.
  • Orange:
    • Tractor , Jam , and Disarm tokens are all red in 1e, which doesn't fit the new color identity of these effects. Tractor is also a rhombus instead of a circle, which doesn't follow the "round tokens only last for the round" rule of thumb.
  • Special:
    • Charges and Force Charges are brand-new tokens. I suppose you could use Munition/Illicit tokens, or epic Energy counters to represent these, but again, they're supposed to be flipped in use. Red Sharpie to the rescue!

To that end, my recommendations are:

  • KEEP: Focus, Evade, and Reinforce, because they all pretty much function the same.
  • CONSIDER: Locks, Cloak, and Stress, because you can make them work fairly well.
  • MODIFY & REPURPOSE: Munitions, Illicit, Epic Energy, and Shield, by making one side red, if you feel like it.
  • PACK AWAY: Ion, Tractor, Jam, and Disarm, because they differ too much from modern uses, and could be considered confusing.

Thanks!! I am mainly looking for what to keep and what to shuffle away in a box or recycle.

Are yours rhombus? That's interesting.

The ones I have (from the conversion kit) are circular just like the disarm and jam. Also thought Tractor comes off at the end of the end phase (unless Ketsu Onyo crew activates), that's the way we have been playing it anyway.

The 1e tractor tokens are rhombus. Not the 2e ones.

And you're correct about when they are removed.

The 1.0 Tractor tokens are rhombus which is why you probably shouldn't use them in 2.0 as they're supposed to be round.

Ah I see now, never saw Tractor much in 1.0. That makes more sense.

Orange Acrylic Stress tokens from last year's regionals? :p I have orange stress, I can remove 'em at the end phase!

From the recent Tournament regulations:

"All X-Wing First Edition and Second Edition nonessential components are legal for Standard Play tournaments—including official promotional indicators like tokens and other components given out at events or tournaments— unless the specific Game Mode being utilized does not allow them."

"First edition shields may be used, but a player must mark one side in some manner that clearly indicates whether the shield is active or lost."
