Proton & Sonic Charge Markers

By Crawfskeezen, in Star Wars: Legion

I'll be honest, the tokens are a bit drab for these explosives so I've been toying with some ideas of how to make my own. With the priority supplies making it easy to have nicer objectives I figure why not try something with some other markers (I'm ok with the aim/dodge/standby/etc...). Miraculously it turns out that Citadel 25mm bases for 40k are literally the EXACT same size. Like to the millimetre.

Now I just have to figure out what to put on top of them.

For the Sonic Charges I was thinking of using a regular washer or two with an external star washer (like one of these) on top and something to fill in the middle.

For the Proton Charges I'm not quite sure. A thin straw or cylinder on top of a small disc or washer with a smaller pip on top. I'm just wondering what gauge of cylinder to use and how tall they should be. It wouldn't be hard to just cut down my own segments. I've seen some of the Shapeways printed options but where's the fun in that.

All that said the charge "models" on the base will most definitely be bigger than they actually should be, like the ones in the trooper's hands but so are the ones in the illustrations on the cardboard markers.

In the tournament scene I doubt it will fly, maybe if you sit down with the TO or judges to show them that the token and the bottom of the base are both 25mm may help but I wouldn't hold my breath, especially in higher level play.

I like the idea, is more inmersive. Maybe someone will make 3D printable bits for this.

Im with you that it is prettier, , but I like them as flat cardboard disks for a reason.

So this came up for me playing imperial assault. I was thinking that I'd like to see the companion pieces have their own models. However that would cause a game problem. They are flat because they don't block LOS and they can occupy the same square as an actual figure.

The charges are the same thing. If you put #D charges on the board then you have to worry about ow they interact next to or on terrain or with a figure on top of them (can happen...maybe shouldn't happen but can happen).

That's why I wouldn't use them as 3D tokens, but I see why you might want to make them. I also might not want them on the table in organized play.

I see that issue as well and would address it exactly like I do in IA: always place the token first then put the 3D element on top.

The 3D element can be removed to allow occupancy of the token if needed. This is likely less of an issue in Legion than IA as these would likely not cause issues of LOS questions arising mid-game like it *could* in IA (I always ask my opponent in IA if they mind me using my Junk Droid R2 repaint in-game because I know it could cause LOS confusion).

I've been looking for these since the units were announced! Thanks!

I hear you about interactions with terrain and whatnot but I doubt I'll be making them large enough to impact line of sight.

I printed this out and the base is actually a bit larger than the token. I'll have to modify or resize to keep it accurate.

The bevel is what makes it too large.

I’d imagine there will be a Priority Supplies part 2 at some point - maybe they will show up there.

It may make sense to have the proton charge stuck to something else, like a tree trunk, and the sonic charge partly buried or hidden some other way. That way they can be smaller and still make sense, especially if you paint the base to make it obvious. Or maybe a little blinky LED?

It’s hard to imagine a situation where you would want your mini on a charge token, so I’m not sure why overlap would be a problem. I can’t imagine LOS being hindered by something so small - since it isn’t terrain it shouldn’t matter anyway.

Force Push

You inspired me so I started constructing some in-scale proton charges this morning. FLGS only had slotted Citadel bases but found some printed 25mm that match my mat enough that I picked them up

do have file for bombs or how did get scale

They were scratch-built. I used a bamboo skewer for the main body and a larger straw for the bottom.

I’m actually thinking that some extra flight pegs would have worked as well.

Very nice.
