Mr. Zachareth's Conditions - one off or full game

By Steel82, in Runewars Rules Questions

I recently witnessed a couple of my buddies playing a match with the new Baron Zachareth character in one of their armies. First off, the model is awesome! I had a question about his condition set though. His character card reads:

"Before your activation, you may receive either "Savior of Carthridge" or "Betrayer of Carthridge." Limit once per game.

The way it was played was as follows: My buddy chose the "Betrayer of Carthridge" condition upon his first activation. The condition remained on the character for the entirety of the 8 rounds. I was confused because when I initially read up on the character, I interpreted the "limit once per game" as meaning you could execute that condition one time. He continued to use the condition throughout the game allowing an extra dice on all of his attacks. Admittedly my knowledge on conditions, in general, is limited as it is a bit newer - but other conditions I'm familiar with that remain in play throughout a game don't explicitly state "limit once per game". This is what caused me to question whether it was being played correctly or not. Does anyone know?

The limit once per game is to prevent him from gaining both Saviour and Betrayer. With this wording, he has to commit to one or the other each game, but it continues to be useful to him throughout.

This is precisely what my buddy said. The question it raised for me was - why even mention the part where it states "Before your activation" on the card. It would seem unnecessary unless the idea is to reserve that decision for a clutch moment in the game.

Yes, but it has to be a clutch decision at the time Baron Z activates. You can't decide to hand out your boons just before a different unit activates.

Yeah Betrayer doesn't have an effect for gaining the condition, but Savior is a big rally, and because it's before the activation you could for example use it to ready Lord of Subterfuge and remove an immobilize token in order to use Lord of Subterfuge and then charge, when otherwise you might not be able to do either. Similarly, if you have another unit that desperately needs a bane removed, you'd need to ensure you activate Zachareth first in order to trigger Savior.
