Re: Follow-up film to Solo

It's possible that such a film that was on the drawing board, but given the film's underwhelming performance (while it didn't completely bomb at the box office, neither did it break even) the odds of getting that follow-up are pretty slim.

Part of that is going to depend on how good the home video sales are; there's been more than a few films that underperformed at the box office that still got sequels green-light simply because the home video sales were strong enough to make up the difference and then some.

Of if the execs at Lucasfilm decide that maybe they want to take another gamble on Alden-as-Han and see if this time it pays off.

Blade Runner, Hot Tub Time Machine, Chronicles of Riddick, all got sequels because of the Home Video Sales even though they are considered Box Office Failures. Those don't even have the Merchandise like Solo has. So I wouldn't be surprised if Solo ends up making Disney plenty of Money in the long haul.

I don’t know I feel I buy into this talk of Han needing to ‘go dark’. He demonstrated that he already isn’t afraid or hesitant to pull the trigger if he has the drop on someone who might turn the table on him, and that seems about as dark as he is by 0BBY. I am also only now realising that Han shot first... wow, ultimate derp!

Yeah, to be honest, I also think they did a good job of demonstrating a more jaded, cynical Han at the end of the film. They didn't expressly demonstrate the kind of man he becomes but the path he was set on at the end was pretty clearly implicit. I don't think another film would be required for that. Of course deep down we know he's a good guy but that only makes sense given that he demonstrates as much in OT.

However, I'd watch the heck out of some more Edge stories films. They don't need Han to draw me in. They can approach different genres happily, as RO and Solo have both done, and that's a trend I'm interested in. I'd like to see what Donald Glover would have done with his Lando idea but to be honest I agree with the @2P51 when he says main characters aren't required. If anything they can be a real detriment. To my mind, cramming the same characters into every piece of media in a franchise of this nature only serves to shrink the scale of the universe.

Got the DVD to rewatch it with my nephew, having seen it in the cinema together.

I showed him photos from the movie & the trailer, but he could absolutely not remember having watched it.

I enjoyed it a lot. I think it suffered more from backlash hatred of Last Jedi more than any true criticism of itself

Interesting recent tangent RE: Last Jedi 'backlash'

I don't think anybody reasonably thinks Solo won't turn a profit for Disney. It probably already has, when you consider the merchandise you mentioned. Over-saturation is the biggest problem right now, which is why they want to slow down film output.

Also, in fairness, Blade Runner didn't get a sequel for 35 years on its home release sales. That might not be the best marker to use here. But I do agree with your point.

Well, you must be excited for The Mandalorian, then!

And related to @Takeshi84's point above, TV/streaming is probably where we'll see development of future Star Wars Stories concepts, especially ones concerning original characters. For me, that's fine and will probably work even better. I'd prefer to see more in-depth character stories play out in the galaxy, and the films are more appropriate for more of the "mythology" of the franchise.

So now we are all alt-right russian trolls, huh? Of course, the left is pure so they never do anything like this.

Fine science there, right up there with leeches for medicine and flat earth for geophysics.

Even if they are right, they are part of the problem. A good paper would have been politically neutral.

Of course, the study doesn’t say that everyone who disliked the movie is “an alt-right Russian troll.” What it does state is that some who expressed their dislike in more vitriolic, outrageous manners may have been influenced to do so by those sorts of trolling/influencer accounts.

Of course you have quotes from the paper stating that all critics are alt-right trolls, right? You wouldn't just make up something like that, would you?
