Why Play KeyForge?

By Amanal, in KeyForge

With the unique deck game you get to buy a unique deck, named and with contents that no one else will ever get. You get a sense of ownership that you don’t with any other game.I think the game challenges you to take an introspective look and see just why gaming is important to you. So what about KeyForge was it that sparked your interest?

I love the meta-less gameplay.

I can play my own deck without anyone calling it trash.

I can play in tournaments confident I won't have to face the same cookie cutter net-deck that 90% of the players brought.

I can get fully built decks without having to search for $50 ultra rare cards.

This, this and this.

From my experience with most games. He who spent the most wins the most.

That could be a bit of a problem in this game but I doubt it will be as bad compared to games with $500+ decks.

Richard Garfeild was a definite draw for sure. I don't love every game he's designed, but when he puts anything out, especially a card game, I'll take notice.

The distribution model really intrigued me too. The idea that each deck is unique is what made me take a second look. Then the price was another positive. $10 is very much in the impulse buy category for me, and knowing I'll get a playable, unique deck for that price is amazing.

What truly got me though was watching some gameplay videos. After seeing how the game played I printed up some proxy decks and have been introducing the game to anyone that will listen. I haven't been smitten by a game like this in a very, very long time.

It's silly.

I love the distribution model, the pre-built decks, the simplicity of the gameplay and the various ways in which it can be played, the low cost of a deck legal.

But I keep going back to the silliness.

I'm an avid card game player who needed a physical side game to play alongside L5R. Keyforge is checking all the boxes (cheap, fresh, low skill floor / reasonnably high skill cieling, relatively short game time).

I like the meta and building aspect of card game too much for it to become my main game. But it's a perfect side game.

The same reason I choose to play any game... it looks like fun.
