In you spend a focus to modify 0 dice?

By K13R4N, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Garven Dreis says after you spend a focus a friendly ship at R1-R3 can get a focus. If I roll 0 focus results can I still spend my focus token?

No.

The fact that you can't spend a focus to convert 0 eye results is in the rules reference.

Nope.

You have to change all [focus] results to [hit] or [evade] results, and you can’t do that if you don’t have any [focus] results. Rules reference, page 11:

Quote
• While a focused ship performs an attack, during the Modify Attack Dice step, it may spend a focus token to change all of its [focus] results to [hit] results.
• While a focused ship defends, during the Modify Defense Dice step, it may spend a focus token to change all of its [focus] results to [evade] results.

Additionally:

• A ship cannot spend a focus token to change [focus] results to [hit] or [evade] results if it does not have any [focus] results.

It's worth noting that this is a ruling that has changed since First Edition. Previously, you COULD spend a token to convert zero results... now, that's not allowed.

This also effects Keyan Farlander Ten Numb, because he can't spend his stress token if he doesn't have a focus result to spend it on.
