Ballistic Critical Tables finally completed!

By Friend of the Dork, in Dark Heresy House Rules

Hey guys!

Quite a while ago I endeavored to make my own Critical tables for gunshot-like wounds as I found the Impact tables more befitting bludgeoning weapons than guns (unless they are used as such of course).

The goal in these tables is to provide a bit more inspiring bullet wound descriptions for gamemasters, but with effects similar to the other Critical tables already in existence. As such I've tried to make them fun yet using the same principles used for the original tables. They were surprisingly difficult to come up with though, and I was for a long time uninspired to continue them. But now in a burst of inspiration they are finally done.

They are made in Excel and designed for printing, but I can't upload them to these forums. I'll try posting them instead even if they may ugly that way.

Greg, I'm mailing them to you :) Anyone else who wants the file you may PM me your email address and I will send them to you. Otherwise they are free for (non-profit) use or just ignore them if you want.

So here are the copy/pasted ones:

Ballistic Critical Effects - Body

Critical Damage
1 The shot grazes the target's chest, causing him to bite down in pain. He can only take a half action on his next turn.

2 The attack hits the target's abdomen with force. Although missing any organs, he gasps as the pain sears through his body, causing 1 level of fatigue. If he has no body armor on this location, he is also stunned one round as the bullet exits the body.

3 The target's ribcage is hit, shattering ribs and lodging projectiles deep within him. He suffers 2 levels of fatigue and is also stunned for 1 round.

4 Spots of blood appears as blood vessels are ruptured by the attack. The target suffers 1d10 fatigue from blood loss but is otherwise still standing.

5 "A projectile damages the targets spine, causing an immediate collapse of the body. The target is stunned for 2 rounds and takes 1d5 levels of fatigue as he struggles to regain his footing.
"

6 The attack ruptures the targets guts causing significant Blood Loss as the stomach acids mix with the numerous blood vessels. In addition to the normal chance to bleed to death, a target must succeed a WP test to remain fighting unless Fearless, on combat drugs or otherwise unaware of his impending doom.

7 "The attack ruptures several internal organs. Effects are as above, and in addition any physical activity on the targets part will cause him to bleed to death on a failed toughness test (tested each round of strenous activity).
"

8 The target's heart is hit, disrupting the flow of blood to the brain. On a successful Toughness the test that target can function for 1d5 rounds before the brain succumbs to the lack of oxygen, causing immedeate death.

9 "The attack severs the spinal cords destroying the central nervous system. The heart stops beating and the body crumbles to the ground instantly. The target is no more.
"

10 + "The target is shred to pieces by a hailstrom of bullets. fragmens of bone, muscles and organs are splattered behind him, causing anyone within 5 meters behind the direction of the attack to be covered in blood and gore, blinding them until a half action is spent wiping it away.
"

Ballistic Critical Effects - Head

Critical Damage
1 The shot grazes the target's face, causing 1 level of fatigue from the stinging pain.

2 The bullet slices open the target's scalp, which begins to bleed profusely. Due to blood pouring into the target's eyes, he suffers a -10 penalty to both WS and BS for 1d10 rounds. He is also stunned one round as the bullet tears through the skull.

3 The target's ear is hit, making a large hole in it. He suffers 2 levels of fatigue and is also deafened for 1 round as his ears fill with blood. After this he is at -10 to hearing based perception tests until treated or healed.

4 A bullet rips through the target's jaw, destroying several teeth and crushing part of the jawbone. The target is stunned for 2 rounds as he chokes on his own fractured teeth. He also takes 1d5 levels of fatigue.

5 The shot drives through the target's eye socket, rupturing the optical nerves and destroying the eye (1-5 left, 6-10 right). The target suffers a -10 to BS tests and loses his sense of in depth vision until a replacement can be found. The target is also stunned for 1 round and take 1d5 levels of fatigue.

6 Drain Bramage! The bullets enters the target's brain (if any). On a successful Toughness test he survives, but some important function of the brain is damaged. The subject's Intelligence is halved and other impediments in speech or muscle control may occur.

7 "A bullet hits squarely in the neck, destroying the windpipe and causing massive blood loss. The target falls on his knees, stunned for 1 round and suffocates on his own blood in TB rounds.
"

8 The attack enters the brain making a third eye. It tumbles through the central cortex of the brain and exits through the back of the head, spraying the contents of the brain behind. The target crumbles to the ground like a dummy.

9 The target is shot with such force that it takes the head clean off. Guess he was feeling lucky.

10 + As above, except the bullets continue on. Roll a new attack with the same modifier against any target standing directly behind the target and within range of the gun.

Ballistic Critical Effects - Arm

Critical Damage
1 The shot hits whatever is held in the hand, causing the victim to drop it. Fragile objects may be destroyed.

2 The attack avoids any major artery in the arm, but the target takes 1 level of fatigue from blood loss and shock.

3 The bullet(s) sever 1-2 fingers clean off. Although there is little pain, the victim will take a -20 penalty on tests using that hand and requiring manual dexterity, such as firing a gun. This lasts until treated.

4 Blood vessels are ruptured by the attack. The target suffers 1 level of fatigue from blood loss but is otherwise still standing. The arm is useless for 1d10 rounds or treated.

5 As above, except the major artery is punctured. The target suffers 1d5 levels of fatigue and Blood Loss. The arm and hand strangely enough still works.

6 A bullet shatters the victim's collarbone, making the arm numb and useless until healed. The target is stunned for 1 round, takes 1d5 levels of fatigue, and suffers from Blood Loss.

7 "The attack rips apart veins and and sinew, turning the arm useless. The arm must be amputated or the victim will die of infection in 1d10 days. The target suffers 1d10 levels of fatigue and is stunned for 2 rounds, in addition to suffering from Blood Loss.
"

8 The arm is left a dangling mass. There is very little to amputate, and the victim will have succeed on a Toughness test or die from shock immediately. Even if this succeeds, effect is as above.

9 The poor fellow has his arm shot to bits. He screams incoherently and twitches on the ground a few moments before passing out. Death is certain.

10 + As above, except the arm actually explodes and tumbles several meters backwards, possibly striking anyone in the way. Anyone hit by the limb (Ordinary +10 agility test to avoid) suffers 1d10 Impact damage.

Ballistic Critical Effects - Leg

Critical Damage
1 A glancing shot to the leg stings like a bee, causing the victim to grasp his wound, and can only take a half action next turn.

2 The attack avoids any major artery in the leg, but the target takes 1 level of fatigue from blood loss and shock.

3 The bullet severs a toe. Although there is little pain, the victim is reduced to half movement for 1d5 rounds and suffers a -10 penalty on tests involving his feet, such as jumping and dodge. The latter lasts until treated or healed.

4 Blood vessels are ruptured by the attack. The target suffers 1 level of fatigue from blood loss but is otherwise still standing. The leg is useless for 1d10 rounds or treated.

5 The bullet goes through the victim's foot and rips apart the Achilles heel. The target drops prone immediately, and the foot is useless unless all the critical damage is healed. With support or crouches movement is halved, without it only crawling is possible.

6 A bullet shatters the victim's kneecap, making the limb numb and useless until healed. The target is stunned for 1 round, takes 1d5 levels of fatigue, and has half movement. If both legs are rendered useless only crawling is possible.

7 "The attack ruptures large blood veins and muscle, turning the leg useless. The leg must be amputated or the victim will die of infection in 1d10 days. The target suffers 1d5 levels of fatigue and suffers from Blood Loss.
"

8 The attack leaves the leg a dangling mass. The victim will have succeed on a Toughness test or die from shock immediately. Even if this succeeds, effect is as above.

9 The attack hits the thigh and almost separates the leg from the body. Unless the victim receives healing or a tourniquet in TB rounds the poor fellow will die in a geyser of blood.

10 + As above, except the leg is ripped off and tumbles backward. The victim falls down clutching his stump while spraying blood everywhere around him. Anyone within 5 meters will be covered in blood and needs to take a half action to clear the blood from the face in order to see.

Hi "Friend",

I would suggest the following change to the body "8"

================================================================================================================
8 The target's heart is hit, disrupting the flow of blood to the brain which means death is near. On a successful the test on willpower , however, that target can function for (TB) rounds before the brain succumbs to the lack of oxygen.
================================================================================================================

To me, WH40K is rather cinematic and about heroic stubbornness. This change would reflect this.

Talking "Head":
I would turn "7" into something deadly. As far as I remember, the "Laser" (Energy) 7 is deadly, so the "bullet-7" should be killing as well.

Body 8:

Eh each to his own. For that kind of crit It's more about how fast the brain dies. Would you require a willpower test to avoid drowning? Same thing really. Willpower to avoid panicking while drowning or getting **** might be more appropriate though, or perhaps even to ignore pain.

But show me the "mind of matter" super kung-fu monk that can rip out his own heart and survive and I'll concede the point ;)

Head 7:

What part of "suffocates in his own blood" did you not get? ;) Sorry for teasing but this crit is indeed automatically killing.

@Body 8
I didn´t made myself clear here. I (would) assume ANY pc/npc to die after (TB) rounds if shot in the heart ("Balliistic-Crit-8") The "willpower" test (in my case) would be to decide if s/he spends his finale moments to "fight on" or if he succumbs to simply give in to shock/pass out and do nothing for the last precious seconds but feeling what it is like to die.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Point is that it's not his decision. It's about how fast the brain getting starved of oxygen. The variation here is only about how quickly the heart stops beating, and how long until the brain runs out of oxygen. I could simply assign a random number (say 1d5 rounds), but I thought Toughness was fitting better into the system.

However feel free to add a WP check to see if the person actually decides to use those rounds to actually do anything. My NPCs would probably focusing on his last words, possibly while stumbling backwards, crashing into things and gripping his heart... before letting out a final shriek of death while spinning around 3 times and falling on the belly.

But that's for the dramatic element :) I'd rather my PCs have a choise to go out in a blaze of glory without demanding a WP test ;) Hmm I might consider just removing the T test and just letting them have TB rounds for free... hmmm...

This crit chart makes ballistic weapons much more deadly. Not really sure I want to make basic Las weaponry even less appealing to the average character.

Well yes I may be biased towards SP weapons here. When I made the crits I tried to make less deadly than explosive, more deadly than the Impact table, and similar in lethality to the Rupture table (which is the most similar in nature to bullet wounds). I hardly ever looked at the Burns table (or whatever it is called). If you ask me that table should get some buffing in the first place, criticals from fire and similar weapons should be monstrous. Instead you have results like 1d10 fatigue damage and no permanent damage instead of certain death at even high levels.

Feel free to buff Las weapons any way you want if you think they are underpowered (to some extent I think so too), but I'd rather have a slightly overpowered table than one trying to sell off bullet wounds as equivalent to punches.

As for unbalancing the game, it's not so much a problem really since most NPCs use the Sudden Death rule which makes criticals irrelevant. Only important NPCs and the PCs themselves matters here.
