Side Bumpers on larger mats question

By Gridloc, in Terrain Building

Being a big table top gamer, I find when I look to buy mats, going with 6x4 is my preferred size so that they be can be used in a variety of games. That said, what are people using for 6 inch bumpers or means to mark off unused gamespace on their larger mats. I was hoping to find something that can be rolled up or broken down so can travel.

Get some 1/2” thick mdf and cut it into the size segments you want. Glue some felt or something grippy to help keep cards and what not in place.

We’ve drawn very light black lines on our boards and also have just used painters tape as well on other ones doesn’t look as bad as you think

Just up the point limit a bit and play on 6x4

I've been roughly marking the 6" off by placing the unit and upgrade cards on the border, spaced evenly across the whole 6' side. It is inexact and requires a measurement in some situations but it is a good rough guideline and is easy to implement.

I'm using cork board on the sides for mine, creating a border around the entire playing area.

ive used masking tape for this purpose.

Range equals 6". I just lay cards with range 1 of mat edge.

It would be nice to have two neoprene mats that are 6ft x 6inches...

Maybe strips of felt 6” wide?

But I’ve seen people line up dice, or use folded pieces of paper...

You could get a 2nd mat that is 6’x3’ and lay it on top! 😝

Oh felt is a great idea!

My neoprene is super dusty and gets kinda bent outta shape.

Masking tape works, but you need to remove it every time you play or it will leave a glue like film

I use a roll of shelf liner that I have cut in 6" wide strips and lay it along the long edges. Works perfectly and gives a place to put the cards.

I keep 2 long strings of yarn in my game box and tape them down 6" in from the mat sides. I can reuse and put away without issue. A couple pieces of tape keep it from moving and the yarn is reusable so best of both worlds.
