5x Y-wings?

By Surak, in X-Wing Squad Lists

ok, so I've been kicking around some ideas for a new version of one of my 1.0 favourites, Quad Y-wings (in particular 4x Autoblaster, BTL-A4, R2/Unhinged astromech, Y-wings).

in doing so I've noticed that 5x Y-wings with Dorsal Turret and R4 Astromech fits into 200pts (either exactly using using Hired Gun/Gold Squadron pilots, or with 10pts to spare using Goons/Gray Squadron pilots).

so my question is this, has anyone tried this on the table? Do you think it has any chance of being moderately effective*?

* mostly casual environment, mainly looking for fun and a 50/50 ish won rate most of the time

5 Y-Wings seems like pushing it. You'd be looking at 5 ships with only 2 red dice, and that seems... weak. Switching to Ion Turrets on lower PS Y-Wings (or skipping the droids on higher PS) seems decent, since you'd at least have control potential, and you'd be more likely to get that first damage through when rolling 3 dice. Dorsals don't seem likely to do that much more than 1 damage anyhow, most of the time, so I'd just invest in Ion.

At 4 Y-Wings, things seem like the open up, IMHO. You could get 3x Goons with Ion Cannon, R4, and Veteran Turret Gunner (which consensus rules interpretation says can double-tap with a front arc), plus Drea Renthal with the same kit to grant them rerolls on both attacks. You could swap the VTG on Drea for upgrading to Hired Guns over Goons. This adds a lot more dice thrown, at the cost of smaller ship count. Toss a bunch of Ion shots into someone, pounce at Range 1 with rerolls.

"Q: When a ship with its turret arc indicator pointing at its ?
performs a ? attack, has it also attacked from that ??
A: No. For example, if a ship equipped with Veteran Turret Gunner performs a
primary ? attack, it could use Veteran Turret Gunner’s ability to perform a
? attack even if the turret arc indicator is pointing at its ?."

The updated Rules Reference goes live Friday. Look it over.

I played the launch tournament with 4, 2 ion turret and 2 proton bomb dorsal turret.

I went 2/2, which is quite good for me!

Running them at casual night tomorrow as well, and maybe at a tournament on the weekend.

I played X-Wings right through 1.0 so I need a change!

So, the turrets are bad. Like, they just are. By the time you've added their points to a ship, you have a ship too expensive to be doing the amount of damage the do (both with dorsal and ion). The fact that you need 2 hits to land the Ion on a small base makes it very unreliable, so it's hard to capitalize on when it does happen and the range 1-2 is rough. Even for their relatively low points, I've found both turrets to be weapons you really don't want close to 40pt ships bringing as their only weapon.

I would definitely suggest trying Proton Torpedoes over turrets. They're much scarrier, do a lot more work and the cost difference is negligible for what you get. Plus, infinite torps because of reload.

I'm not sure I'd suggest going all Y's because such a list is very inflexible, but Y's are very solid for what you get.

thanks for the feedback all,

never thought I'd say it, but I miss my Autoblaster turrets :( as I'm really not a fan of either of the current turret options.

having said that, I'm not sure torps will ever actually get fired thanks to needing a lock and the range 1 blind-spot (i tend to fly super aggressive, my prime 1.0 build was double yv666 alpha strike)

i may throw the original list on a table and report back how it goes

ok, how about this version

Almost surely better than all generics.

That's what i figured, that's probably the one I'll try first

Ok, taking some of your advice, I switched things up (due to not having 5 Y wings to hand) - I went for this list instead:

BTL-S8 K-wing - •Esege Tuketu - 55
•Esege Tuketu - Selfless Hero (50)
Cluster Missiles (5)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - •Evaan Verlaine - 52
•Evaan Verlaine - Gold Three (36)
Ion Cannon Turret (6)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - Gray Squadron Bomber - 48
Gray Squadron Bomber - (32)
Ion Cannon Turret (6)
R4 Astromech (2)
Veteran Turret Gunner (8)

BTL-S8 K-wing - Warden Squadron Pilot - 45
Warden Squadron Pilot - (40)
Cluster Missiles (5)

Went up against a Vader led Black Squadron list (Vader plus 5 TIEs) and suffered for some really shifting dice luck - in the first engagement I lost all my shields except for Esege who had one left, and scrubbed two generic TIEs. At the point my dice basically said "we've done enough today" and I didn't manage to roll more than one symbol (hit, evade, focus) on any dice roll for the rest of the game. Fortunately for me, my opponent had a similar run of luck for a few turns, but in the end he eventually wore down my squadron.

Took a few things from the game though:

Double tap Y-wings are great fun ( managed to ion Vader due to the double tap)

The bow-tie arc on the K-wing is really nice

Cluster missiles on the K-wing are also really nice

Evaan plus Esege makes for some surprisingly durable ships (when your dice work)

Even though I've lost all three of my 2.0 games, I'm still having great fun trying (and flying against) a nice variety of lists

I tweaked my 4 x Gold Squadron to include Dutch and Horton, with the Veteran instead of Agile Gunner.

I'm still not mad about keeping the turret arc forward but it should be OK for the first engagement at least. And this version has a few more built-in mods that should help actually do some damage for a change.

Dutch - R3, Ion Cannon, Trick Shot

Gray Bomber - R4, Ion Cannon

Horton - R4, Dorsal Turret, Veteran Gunner, Proton Bombs

Gray Bomber - R4, Dorsal Turret, Veteran Gunner, Proton Bombs

See how it goes this week.

that could be a fun list to fly, I'm actually going to experiment with mixed K and Y wing squadrons a bit more as they flew together really nicely
