So, how’s the app working for everyone else?

By Vykk Draygo, in X-Wing

I use extended only.

No garbage only books movies music.

I refuse to do FFGs work for them at this point. I've spent enough time and money on them to date.

Other squad builders work fine on both.

Agreed. And I am flabbergasted by the amount of acceptance going on for this. Sure, you can still play the game. Sure, there are end-arounds.

Exactly that. Because YASB2.0 (and others) exist and do everything FFGbuilder is supposed to, this whole debacle is a minor inconvenience rather than a catastrophe. FFG could have gone full 2000s GW and started to send out C&Ds to community builders to create a monopoly for their own. I honestly was afraid the license would dictate something like that. But they didn't and so the app launch was just a minor disappointment with the game being completely playable.

Obviously they can't endorse the community builders officially, but honestly Raithos should have a gift basket at his door for every wave, because his work getting YASB 2.0 ready saved the 2.0 launch. FFG should understand that.

There's also this. Not overly informative on bug fixes, and I agree they could be more open about what's going on, but they haven't been completely silent either.

So, while I realize the Orange Guy At the Top has made Twitter a priority for Highly Important Information, not everyone uses that platform.

Might I recommend an actual full-length NEWS article on these very forums to cover such useful information by FFG.

my thoughts exactly.

don't use twitter and only occasional FB use.

I check the news tab here but I guess I was wrong.

New pinned thread in app sub forum on issues that have been addressed since launch. I’m still st wait and see, once it functional.......maybe? We shall see.

Oh I'm all for that as well. They need to work on HOW they communicate (I don't actually use twitter either, but saw it shared on varios facebook groups), just pointing out that they haven't been entirely silent. I'm all for *more* communication as well as more easily found/obvious.

agreed and thanks for posting it.

off to my weekly meet up so I will look into the update tomorrow and see if it is improved.

amazing how in this day and age companies can still be silent when it comes to fixing problems. KS projects/producers are notorious for lack of communication to its backers.

Playing around with it on my phone some, the one way I've managed to make it fail to save a list so far is if I try to save without a squad name it seems to break the save button. That pops up the error message that the squad name can't be empty, then if I add a name and try to save again nothing happens at all (leaving the name blank and hitting save again doesn't pop up the error again either).

If I start a new squadron and enter a name before I hit save, it's worked for me every time so far (leaving blank and saving, then adding and saving later has failed every time)

For me it's any time I have os1 config.

After I put that in **** gets weird. Saves stop working and it can crash out adding any ship or upgrade after that title.

Took me a while cause I'm a gunboat fan so half my lists were failing. Still dunno why I have saved squads that just disappear or lose ships though.

I will say that this is kind of a big deal to me in terms of feeling like this game/company deserves my support.

I feel/felt like a lot of 1.0 was made better thanks to the work of many 3rd parties, who did it for the love of the game and the thanks of the community.

Now, FFG swoops in, steals their thunder, invalidates 5 years of free work, doesn't thank them for any of it (in fact, alienates many of them who will now not provide those services to the community), and then fields an Official Replacement that is so awful that we are back to 3rd party efforts by those that are willing to hold on and roll with the punches.

I honestly think FFG really deserves a whole lot of flak for the 2.0 edition roll-out. It may have helped the game, but it is really hurting the community.

A. I 100% agree.

B. I'm not sure they do. :(

Nah they probably think they've done everything perfectly judging by how they talk to the distributors and stores they shorted on promos. There's no teaching moment here if they think they're the bees knees.

Interesting thread.

after the first two terrible days and implemented fixes, I've had zero issues with the app. Yes, the interface and navigation are clunky for sure. Yes some key features are missing for sure. but I've had no issues with building or saving at all. I'm running it on an iPhone 7. current app version 1.0.2. Looking forward to the new features that 1.0.3 should bring.

An hour ago. Hmmm. . .coincidence??

Well, when I'm out here venting about this and that, even if it annoys the crap out of the rest of you (I don't want to, but ya know, opinions vary), I can maybe take solace in the fact that FFG is listening.

Listening like a creepy maladjusted 10 year old, but listening.

Hmm. I haven't built anything with the gunboat yet, so it's possible there's something there doing it. Testing it out now I'm able to build and save just fine with the OS1 title on my iphone (and if I reopone the list after doing so, everything is still there). Have you played with that part today? It's possible that was fixed at the same time as the hardpoint slot for the scyk.

Speaking as one of the developers of the first edition squadbuilders, and having talked to others, I and the ones I've talked to haven't felt that way at all. Conversely, we were quite happy when FFG announced an official squad builder. I don't know of any of the squad builder devs that have been alienated by the release. And new options have popped up to help fill the void for people who aren't happy with FFGs builder.

I also disagree that the roll-out is hurting the community. There's been some rough patches with the rollout, but I really doubt the community is hurting as a whole outside of a few vocal upset people.

lol. In fairness, the pinned changelog post is just a new thread with the stuff that used to be in the OP of the also-now-pinned update post, so there's nothing new, but at least they are listening and doing something :)

Well, good then for the 1st 2 bits.

And an up to date changelog is a very helpful addition to monitoring the progress of debugging.

I'm going to call it a victory, fellow threadites!! ?

Now just waiting for the iOS update to drop to see if it fixes saving lists for people having issues...

Edit: Nevermind, it's live now. Wasn't ther elast time I checked.

Edited by VanderLegion

I'm at least able to save a list now after trying to save with no name, seeing the error, then adding a name and trying again.

Still one Mod slot on the Scum HWK, PDF says there should be two, so... I guess I keep building/tinkering with YASB.

There was a new update and it did fix it. That's 1 down.

The one thing I've seen for generating illegal lists is the ability to equip both a unique pilot and the crew/gunner version of the same person. While this is clearly a bug, it will presumably be fixed (probably before too long) and is rather obvious and easy to check for to validate lists. And has NO bearing on the ability to use the app to balance the game.

Whether it's clearly a bug is irrelevant.

It's supposed to be a viable source for official listbuilding. If you can use it to generate an illegal list is fails that basic test. We here might all know that you can't do that, but a brand new player might well not, and might end up coming to an event with an illegal list because the builder let them and they don't know better.

It's a basic failure of a core part of the product.

Having looked back at the website again it's still a usability nightmare, too. Clicking on a pilot doesn't add it to the list, clicking on a list of upgrades still gives you a page of upgrades that you can't get out of without scrolling back to the top, the double-scroll-bar thing is still there and still infuriating, it's just bad.

I'm pretty sure they do, YASB especially was promoted on every of their social channels, including this forum, whenever someone complained about not being able to play thanks to the borked app, but it is not like they can go out and say so.

The truly unfortunate thing is that they can't even get rid of the devs they hired efficiently, because getting someone briefed on strangers code (especially from people that deliver something like this, can't be pretty) would be a nightmare.

This is definitely not true.

What does it not do?

This update is a lot snappier. I’d still like the ability to view my whole list and upgrades without downloading a pdf, and the ability to view both sides of dual cards. But it’s getting pretty close to YASB 2.0 for me.
