Looking for good strategies.

By Ken on Cape, in Runewars

My copy of RuneWars should get here by Friday. cool.gif I have downloaded and read the rules. Anyone have any good types/ strats for new players?

Be aggressive and plan your year out in advance if possible; know what you are going to do each season (but allow room for adjustment if necessary). Diversify your army, don't just focus on one type (try to get two dials worth of good figures, all 3 if possible just for more options).

Influence is vital - don't squander it, but at the same time it's only as good as you use it, so don't just hoard it eather.

yeh definitely diversify. i teid to play undead and get hold of lots of necromancers so that i cud use their ability. but if i had a few archers in there wud have been much more effective.

always have a lot of influence going into winter. Get three heroes as quickly as possible. harvest "out of order" the supremacy bonus blows and you can use it to recoup the cost of fortify easily.

Depends on the game layout. I don't often buy the "harvest-triggered" developments anymore, but I will often buy the defensive ones, especially as humans or Uthuk. They can really change the tide of battle.

Hang on to your influence for winter when you can possibly grab a Dragon Rune is one thing I always forget to do.

Don't bother negotiating with neutrals , just attack them and drive them off , save your influence.

As with miost of our games , having influence and tactics cards at the right time will win you the game.

There are some great tactics cards and some not so good , use them wisely !

Keep an eye on enemy heroes , kill them all!

PS - look at what resources you actually need.

Food is the most important , and you should look at getting your resources up to 8 food so you can survive the winter.

So as soon as you set up , look at the map and work out how you can get 8 food .

Fortify the areas where you have a good supply of food.

I enjoy using diplomacy, but I don't waste influence on it either. I send one guy, draw one card and accept the result, then I attack them if they don't join me. =)

It depends on the neutrals, the number of cards left, and how much influence you have.

I had a game where we were down to the last 10 cards or so, and there were still 3 "gold" results in the deck. Sure as heck I was gonna spend as much as I could to try and recruit a large group of neutrals which had gathered (and it sure paid off, too!)

This is one of the more subtle strategies that new players miss and should be watched for at all times. The only other thing i would add to this thread is to not underestimate hero's and their uses.
