Up close and squadronless

By rastahotep, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

The point of this fleet is to get all my Imperial ships on the table rather than to be particularly competitive. I’ve chosen Ozzel mainly because he’s cheap. I think I would use the ISD and Raider on the flanks, start them all off at speed 1 and then use his ability to quickly bring the ISD and Raider to where they are needed. The Gozantis are there to spam engineering tokens to the Interdoctor and as an extra activation.

Up Close And Squadronless (399/400)
Empire

Commander: Admiral Ozzel

Objectives: Advanced Gunnery, Dangerous Territory, Contested Outpost

[flagship] Imperial I-class Star Destroyer (110)
- Admiral Ozzel (20)
- Leading Shots (4)
= 134 total points

Victory I-class Star Destroyer (73)
- External Racks (3)
- Ordnance Experts (4)
= 80 total points

Raider I-class Corvette (44)
- External Racks (3)
- Ordnance Experts (4)
= 51 total points

Interdictor Suppression Refit (90)
- Interdictor (3)
- Targeting Scrambler (5)
- SW-7 Ion Batteries (5)
- Projection Experts (6)
= 109 total points

Gozanti-class Cruisers (23)
- Comms Net (2)
= 25 total points

I’m a bit concerned about enemy squadrons, but I can’t see any way of creating any meaningful fighter cover without getting rid of the Gozantis. I’m counting on killing carriers quickly, so any suggestions for how to do that more effectively with these ships would be appreciated. I’m happy swapping upgrade cards not ships, but feel free to suggest different roles for the ships.

Wow. Kudos for having an original fleet with plenty of varied (and scarsely seen) ships!

General feedback (on your questions):

- Objectives: Not sure about Advanced gunnery. Your list could make good use of Blockade run. You have 5 ships, and it helps setting up the Victory and the Raider. Or Station Assault (but then you might want to take the Grav Shift Reroute on your Interdictor). Yes your ISD could use the Advanced Gunnery, but you can't plan for it.

- Squadron: Either you try to answer the squadron question with a Raider equiped to lock them down (flechette torpedoes and OE), or you accept that, without activation from a ship, non-rogue squadrons are a threat for one turn per game. So, you rush in, kill the activators, and run away. Easy to say, hard to pull off, but that's the general game plan going squadronless.

Details & recommendation (feel free to ignore):

- Might want to put Ozzel on Interdictor. You are going to send your ISD 1 into the fray, risking it more than the interdictor, which means higher chance of dying. So save 20 pts, save an Ozzel ... and don't leave hyperspeed too soon.

- Might want to take Jerry over Ozzel. It's more expensive, sure. But he helps your list more. The only ships that can REALLY use Ozzel's ability are your ISD and your Raider. And they could just as easily do it with a nav token saved earlier in the game. ISD at speed 3, VSD at speed 2 and Raider at speed 3+ all can use a Jerry at their side.

- Might want to take Disposable Capacitor on the Interdictor. Again, it's more expensive, but with a double arc, it's 2 red and 6 blues at long range, which is an heavy pounding to take.

Drop SW7 and OE from the VSD (they are slow and black dice shots don't usually happen more than once a game). 10 points to play with.

Buy Boarding Troopers and Avenger for the ISD-I turning it onto a deadly ship killer. 2 points left.

Then buy Grav Shift or Grav Well on the Interdictor, or scrape together a point or two from say the Comms Net and upgrade your commander to Motti or Moff Jerjerrod. I'm not that keen on Ozzel in a fleet with a pair of max-speed-2 ships.

You dont own a gladiator? No demolisher in your life? Wowzers

Thanks for your advice and suggestions. I’ll have to take some and leave the rest as my lack of an Arquitens or Quasar leaves me without Jerry, Boarding Troopers or Disposable Capacitors.

@Mad Cat Do you think it’s still worth putting Avenger on in spite of this? I could pair it with Supressor. Or should I keep SW7s or even use the points to stick XI7s on the ISD?

@Coranhann Putting Ozzel on the Interdictor makes a lot of sense and Grav Shift Reroute is also a good shout. However, I’m stuck with core set objectives. Maybe Most Wanted would work better.

@Ginkapo haha. I haven’t seen the ship outside of Armada, so it’s never really appealed to me.
