Rebel Han Solo's Ability Text

By BVRCH, in X-Wing Rules Questions

"After you roll dice, if you are at range 0-1 of an obstacle, you may reroll all of your dice. This does not count as rerolling for the purpose of other effects."

Its this last part that has got me thinking. What scenario does this apply too? The new FAQ uses Han as an example to explain that all dice equals all available dice that have not been re-rolled yet. This is the same as this rule has always been which is fine. However, if so then when does this last piece of text on his ability actually do anything?

With this FAQ excerpt in mind, I can't see scenario where this text applies. Does it apply to 3-CPO's ability for that full 'never tell me the odds' moment? Maybe the Blinded Pilot crit? I'm sure I'm missing something but can someone enlighten me?

Normally it is only possible to reroll dice once, but with Han you can:

>Roll your dice
>Decide you dislike them
>Use Han to reroll (But not for the purpose of other effects) all of them
> Use XYZ upgrade to reroll any further blanks, as, thanks to the secondary wording on Han, they aren't considered to be 'rerolled'.

That contradicts the FAQ excerpt though.

Q: If a card such as Han Solo [YT-1300, Scoundrel for Hire] or Saturation Salvo instructs a player to reroll “all dice” or a specific number of dice but there are not enough eligible dice, what happens?

A: The player rerolls as many eligible dice as possible. In the case of Han Solo [Scoundrel for Hire] and other effects that reroll “all dice,” this means that if 1 or more dice are for any reason ineligible to be rerolled or modified, Han Solo still rerolls the available dice that are eligible.

If that were the case, then Han would never have 'ineligible dice'. This is where I'm confused. I'm inclined to agree with you, but the FAQ pushes in the other direction.

If there was a game effect that said X dice can't be modified for any reason, those would be dice ineligible for Han to reroll.

E.g. Magva Yarro's ability. But if that is the case then the 'this does not count' part of Han's ability does nothing.

Look at my first response.

You can use Han Solo to 'reroll' your dice, and then if some still come up blank, you're then able to use some other upgrade/ability you might have to actually reroll them for the 'one reroll' limit.

Yes I understand the double re-roll concept, but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking how dice become ineligible to Han's ability if it doesn't count as a re-roll? Am I making any sense? They've used him as an example of this, but it seems as though 'all dice' is always 'all dice' for Han as ability doesn't count as re-rolling for other effects such as Magva's.

It seems to me the only way a dice becomes ineligible for Han's ability is if its cancelled or spent. I guess that's what I want confirmed.

Basically, the dice Han rolls don't count as rerolls for purposes of other effects, but it's still a dice modification. Other effects that prevent dice modification would also prevent Han from working. It could be future-proofing against a ship that may be able to, for example, spend a charge to prevent an enemy's die result from being modified once a turn. Omega Leader "Midnight" will have a similar effect, that looks like it would prevent Han's reroll.
