IG-Han

By theBitterFig, in X-Wing Squad Lists

It happens that a friend of mine has been flying a bunch of Han Solo, and while he often throws a lot more dice than he ought to throw for his points cost, those red dice are often unmodified. Frequently, Han has to boost in order to get arc back, for example.

So what could be added to add decent dice mods?

The combination of Lando Calrissian crew and IG-88 D crew gives two Calculate tokens, one of which can be spent to reroll two dice, has been noted for ships like the YV-666. Two rerolls and a calculate token brings you up to an over 50% chance to get 4 hits on 4 red dice, or a 40% chance of 5 hits on 5 dice against a stressed, obstructed target (up from a 24% chance of 5 hits on a single action). Alone, has a lot of potential, and can start out at 73 points with just those two crew, Trick Shot, and the title.

But then it occurred to me: A Falcon has a Boost and can take Engine Upgrade. IG-88 C gives you an Evade token--a green token--when you boost. You'll be able to spend that Evade for two rerolls if you want, going from 2 hits on average with four dice up to 2.8 on four dice (2.2 hits on 3 dice against a stressed, non-obstructed ship rather than 1.5).

The Shell:

  • Han Solo (Trick Shot, Lando, IG-88 D, LMF title, Engine Upgrade) 82
  • IG-88 C (IG-2000 title) 72
  • 46 points to play with.

There are a few filler ship options. Quadjumper seems like a cool one, but an escape craft of some kind, a Z-95, or a Scyk might fit. A sample build:

  • Han Solo (Trick Shot, Lando, IG-88 D, BT-0 (I feel he's less risky than Greedo, and nearly as cheap), Rigged Cargo Chute, LMF title, Engine Upgrade) 88
  • IG-88 C (Trick Shot (why not? nothing else seems great...Maybe Elusive?), Rigged Cargo Chute, IG-2000 title) 77
  • Jakku Gunrunner (0-0-0) 31
    • Total 196, bid 4

Another interesting direction to go would be bombs. A Proton Bomb + Trajectory Simulator package is only 8 points, and could be added by cutting bid and/or rigged cargo chutes.

  • Han Solo (Trick Shot, Lando, IG-88 D, BT-0, LMF title, Engine Upgrade) 84
  • IG-88 C (Elusive, Trajectory Simulator, Proton Bombs, IG-2000 title) 83
  • Jakku Gunrunner (Proton Bombs--rear drop only, but still can choke off space) 33
    • Total 200, bid 0

Im thinking the "Third" ship should be the escape craft with Outer Rim Pioneer, just to help Han and make him more survivable.

Then if you're going with IG-C then i'd go with Juke and Collision Detector.

Outer Rim Pioneer (24)
Shield Upgrade (6)

Han Solo (Scum) (56)
Trick Shot (1)
IG-88D (4)
Lando Calrissian (Scum) (8)
Dengar (6)
Engine Upgrade (9)
Lando's Millennium Falcon (6)

IG-88C (70)
Juke (4)
Collision Detector (5)
IG-2000 (2)

Total: 197

Personally though i'd also consider something other than an Aggressor. I know there is a link but the combo you are pulling off is in no way reliant on the Aggressor and 80+ points can get you alot for Scum. The only concern i have is if you're relying on the calculate you may struggle when you need to do something else like rotate a turret.

The reason I wasn't all-in on Juke with IG-C is that I figure that if I don't want to boost, double calculate might be better. Escape Craft would probably be solid.

As to non-Aggressor versions, the Lando/IG-8 crew combo with title and Trick Shot (dropping Engine Upgrade) comes out to 73 points, which isn't excessive for a Han Falcon. It'll have great dice mods if you don't have to boost for arc. Might be a decent enough swap in another build. The whole premise of the aggressor was trying to find a Han who can get dice mods if he boosts. Having White boosts into dice mods just sounds nice. Like a bit of 1e that we're not supposed to have anymore.

I've enjoyed good success with Elusive on the IGs, and the boost ability is useful for sharing in this context. That said, I've run different variations of IG + Han + 3rd ship and it hasn't quite stuck yet, I had trouble putting damage through (mostly on Boba Guri, who I played a couple times).
