The second is not always the best.

By Lord Deimonos, in Rogue Trader

Hi all. Im returning to GM this glorious game and have a doubt about void ship construction. In the components chart there is the power, space requirements for them. Also there is a SP column. In the component description there is no mention of this, do they consume SP as well, in addition to power and space?

Thanks in advance and Hail the emperor!

If the component don't have SP cost in the table - it consume only power and/or space. Your main expenditure of SP is a hull in any case.

For unspecified components there's standard cost determined by Availability, from +0 (Scarce) to +5 (Unique) for Essential components (presumably Essential start at +0 because such versions are included in ship cost, and you upgrade them rather than add more), with another +1 for Supplemental components, per Expanded Components Cost (BFK Table 1-6).

And generally Archeotech Components are at least Extremely Rare (cost Essential +3 / Supplemental 4 SP), Xenotech Components at least Near Unique (cost Essential +4 / Supplemental 5 SP).

Craftsmanship modifies cost by +1 SP per step of quality, i.e. from -1 (Poor) to +2 (Best).

Thus an essential component with availability Scarce of Common quality or Rare of Poor quality has SP cost +0, and "Scarce" supplemental component of Poor quality has SP cost 0.

Of course, "0 SP" still requires tests for acquisition (and possibly need to pay more if it's not available) and then maintenance, just like any other stuff purchased at <1 SP.

This. Most essential components (drives/shields/bridge) come built into the hull unless you want a particularly shiny version.

Most optional components (gun batteries!) cost you SP as well as power and space.

It isn't cost in SP, it's "cost" in modifiers to acquisiton test. SP cost come into play only at ship construction stage.

Right, it's supposed to be Availability(SP) function, not SP (Availability). My derp.
