Counter for tanky imperial squadrons?

By Nuked92, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi all. Just looking for some general advice, in my local gaming group There’s this one guy who I struggle to beat. Worse, I can’t even identify what I should be doing. He generally fields a variation of the following squadrons.

2 x decimators

boba Fett

1 gauntlet fighter

mauler

colonel jendon

boba, the gauntlet and the decimators either harass my ships or tank my anti squadron squads. Mauler and jendon just make their job easier. He tends to run flak heavy ships like the gsd 2 or ISD’s, so I’m very hesitant to jump them first as he keeps them back until I’ve exposed my bombers. Even if I start working through them, the counters are brutal, and mauler and boba take out my squads very quickly

Thoughts on the best ways to deal with this kind of set up? I’m still quite new to armada, so not sure if this is about my build or how i fly it?

It sounds weird that those squadrons can give you so many problems.

Decimators are tanky but without tokens they won't stand too much. Also they have hard times dealing with scatter aces unless they are piling on a lot of attacks. Without Dengar, Mithel can be engaged and stopped. Everything else is just hull and brace tokens.

Definitely he must play them very well but I don't see how imperial scatter aces cannot deal with them. Ciena Ree can engage Mauler to prevent him from moving and can tank pretty well. Support her with Soontir (if you like him), Rudor and your own Mithel+Dengar. Even just Howlrunner and a ton of ties with FC can make a lot of damage but they will suffer from flak. And if you play rebel, Sarah and Tycho are the best. Supported by e-wings to shoot away from flak and from counter and maybe something more tanky like yt-1300.

I dunno.

Also how are counters brutal? Only 2 squadrons have it and it is just one blue die. And Jendon+Mauler give him nothing, just another three blue dice attack when he has already 4 blue or 3black. Jendon provides an extra attack, not an extra movement.

There are two good answers to a significant investment in rogues I’m familiar with.

One is a lethal fighter complement under Sloane. She and her flying circus of aces are amazing and will shred those squads alive (especially the decimators.) But you will need to learn the nuances of the squadron game so you can win efficiently with your larger squadron investment. Here’s an amazing blog with breakdowns on all the Sloane aces (and everything else in the game.)

And here’s a “standard” Sloane list I’d recommend if you’re interested. Be advised it’s vulnerable to tabling; there’s a learning curve. I like to mix up the squadron comp or go with Boarding Troopers and Advanced Gunnery, but those are matters of personal preference.

Then there’s the exact opposite approach of not spending points on squadrons, having more ships, and going for a quick tabling. This is good against flak upgrades too. It’s a little harder to pull off IMO, because a smart opponent will avoid early engagement so the rogues can soften you up a bit. Trying to force a quick fight and have it be on your terms can be an uphill battle, but it can be done.

Thanks both of you!

I do tend to play rebels, but generally x wings with Biggs, wedge and maybe jan, then some bombers . I tend to target decimators first since their the biggest threat and easier to kill than boba. But it normally takes a few turns of x wings slogging to kill them. And their rolling 3 Black into me during that. 8 damage doing 2 or 3 damage seems like a lot? I mean maybe I’ve just been unlucky with dice but that doesn’t seem likely. I won’t use wedge again, since he doesn’t really work against the rogues going after him. I suppose the counter on top of the flak and 3 black and guaranteed damage just adds up. I’ll try Sharah and Tycho, thanks!

Have you tried a Hammerhead with draven and flechettes?

Decimators excel at killing generics. Bear that in mind. The auto pinging damage is nasty too. Recommend killing Mauler and Boba first. Probably best to engage under your flak curtain too.

Then I guess Sarah and Tycho should be your choice. You could consider also z-95 if you escort them. I imagine that 4 blue die without rerolls will spend some time to put down 8 hull points while 3 black without defense tokens or even with braces can hirt a lot. Basically those decimatos will kill 1 x-wing per round together. z-95 are weak but can also put a lot of damage out for their price and Blunt has scatter also. Dash Rendar has also a really good damage output and 6 hull.

As a brief:

1. Avoid enemy flak.

2. Engage Mithel in order to prevent his movement.

3. Kill Boba and Mithel first.

4. Stop black dice with scatter tokens.
